Danny Mwanga’s reduced role at the Colorado Rapids has him looking towards the east coast for playing time, but it’s not an MLS team that he might soon be joining.

Mwanga is currently training with the New York Cosmos of the NASL, sources have told SBI. The 23-year-old winger is still under contract with the Rapids, but has joined the Cosmos with an eye towards a potential loan move.

Currently in his second season in Colorado, Mwanga has struggled for playing time under first-year head coach Pablo Mastroeni. The speedy Congolese attacker has made just two starts in six league appearances in 2014, which is a drop from the five starts in 13 matches he played in last year for the Rapids.

The Cosmos, who sit in sixth place right now in NASL’s fall season, are no strangers to acquiring MLS players on loan. They currently have Connor Lade of the New York Red Bulls and Seattle Sounders rookie Jimmy Ockford on their books.

Think Mwanga will earn a loan move to the Cosmos? Would that be a good move for him? Should the Rapids be using him a bit more?

  1. He’s not a winger and also not especially speedy. He’s a striker who uses his body to get into good spaces. He’s mobile, but by no means, is he pacey.

  2. Josh D – so low? You do realize the Cosmos defeated the Red Bulls in June during the Open Cup right? Further, they came within a horrible referee’s call of defeating the Philadelphia Union as well in the same tournament? Open your eyes – MLS is only perceived to be the top flight in the US – talent wise that is not entirely the case.

      • oh, the certainly did, Petke even started a top line up (minus DPs and injuries)…and they were dominated 22 shots to 1, 65-35 possession and looked like my over 35 rec team. I won’t go as far as to say its better, its not, but the Cosmos are one of the 20 best clubs in the country…no shame in a guy going there to maybe get more minutes on loan. He’s coming from the Rapids, not Arsenal.

  3. Danny is a US Citizen now. He came home to PDX for the ceremony. I wish he had fit into Porter’s vision somehow. He’s a good guy, I hope this gives him a chance to cone back.
