Saturday was supposed to be Landon Donovan’s day. With retirement looming, the LA Galaxy star was meant to be the man-of-the-hour, with ceremonies, gifts and praise aplenty to make sure that Donovan’s achievements were more than recognized. However, it was the Columbus Crew who made sure their presence truly felt.
The Crew dismantled the Galaxy, 4-1, Saturday at Crew Stadium, issuing a statement of intent to the rest of the Eastern Conference by throwing their name right into the thick of the conference’s playoff picture. The Crew overwhelmed one of the West’s best sides, scoring four goals via four different scorers in the team’s most impressive performance of the 2014 season.
The systematic destruction of one of the league’s top sides was enough to earn the Crew recognition as SBI MLS Team of the Week. The Crew beat out Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas and Sporting Kansas City for this week’s honors.
