SBI Team of the Week: New York Red Bulls

Bradley Wright-Phillips, Peguy Luyindula, Lloyd Sam

It’s said that big-time players show up when needed most. That was the case for the New York Red Bulls this past week, anyways.

Down a goal — and in one case, a man — twice this week, the Red Bulls looked to the likes of Thierry Henry, Dax McCarty, and Bradley Wright-Phillips, and each provided their own big-time moments to help last year’s Supporter’s Shield winners earn four points and SBI Team of the Week honors.

The Red Bulls picked up a point Wednesday at a roaring Rio Tinto Stadium in a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake. Henry reduced the early 1-0 deficit with a calm strike past goalkeeper Nick Rimando in the 57th minute to help the Red Bulls earn a favorable result.

New York then returned home for a weekend meeting with the New England Revolution. What looked to be disaster early played to a 2-1 victory for the Red Bulls. Down 1-0 and reduced to 10 men by the 47th minute, McCarty and Wright-Phillips turned the momentum around with goals to seal up three points.

The Red Bulls beat out Real Salt Lake, the LA Galaxy, and the San Jose Earthquakes for the honors.

What did you think of the Red Bulls’ big week? Can New York make a run up the Eastern Conference standings to challenge the likes of Sporting KC and D.C. United?

  1. I think greed and lack of common since, cost this church a lot of money. Im glad the city moved on and left this broke pastor with his small church. By the way, this soccer stadium would also be a great place for the state high school champion ships games.

  2. “Henry reduced the early 1-0 deficit . . .”

I guess his goal was worth a little less than RSL’s, as it could only reduce — not eliminate — the deficit.

  4. Yes. I think Cahill said it best – you can win 3 or 4 games in a row and wind up at the top of the conference in MLS. With Chicago and Montreal coming up, we should be aiming for 6 points with 4 being the minimum we can accept.

  5. Poor Henry, he needs to do everything and worst part, he won’t win MLS cup without the help of ronaldinho.
If ronaldinho joins red bull, they would win MLS cup or go to MLS cup. Ronaldinho would be too much pressure for the opposing teams, ronaldinho would be a magnet in the middle and he would open so many spaces. Ronaldinho, Henry and Cahill being a poacher, that would be a very good team, plus Philips, max, and their goalkeeper situation is pretty good.
If ronaldinho joins red bull, i say red bull vs galaxy or red bull vs Seattle in MLS cup.
My dark horses, fc Dallas and tfc. I don’t see skc repeating as champs.

    • RBNY scores a lot of goals, but RBNYalso gives up a lot of goals

They’re going to have to grind out some defensive results if they want to win the cup.

      Dear Red Bull,
please market this team. You have a little more than six months to let people know you exist

    • It’s already been confirmed by multiple sources that Ronaldinho isn’t joining the Red Bulls or coming to MLS. Of course, defense is the real problem with this team. In terms of midfielders, Jermaine Jones would have been a better fit than Ronaldinho anyway, though neither of them are joining.

      • Agreed. I think Jones is exactly what RBNY needs. Pushes Cahill up closer to the goal where he belongs and hopefully solidifies the defense as well.

      • Everyone seems to agree that Jones would be ideal for the Red Bulls but it doesn’t seem like it’s happening. I don’t get why not? He’s the right player with the right amount of star power for a big market and has good bounce from his USMNT play in the Brazil. There’s even a Austro/German connection, which I know the Red Bull mothership likes. What gives?
