Manchester City’s final preparation match before their defense of the English Premier League title takes place on Sunday afternoon.

Man City take on Arsenal in the annual preseason warm-up, the FA Community Shield, looking to start their 2014/2015 season on the right foot. While Man City were somewhat quiet in terms of their summer transfer business, Arsenal had no problem splashing the cash, signing Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, and Calum Chambers to their squad.

A number of other teams in Europe play some of their final friendly matches before starting their seasons next week. Tottenham take on Schalke, Liverpool face Borussia Dortmund, and Chelsea face Hungarian side Ferencvaros.

Ligue 1 began their season on Friday afternoon as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paris Saint-Germain traveled to Stade de Reims. Ibrahimovic scored a goal but also missed a penalty in the 2-2 draw. In addition, AS Monaco kick off their season against FC Lorient and Marseille travel to Bastia in interesting opening matches this weekend.

Elsewhere in the world, Liga MX and MLS continue, with Club America and the Seattle Sounders both must-watch teams this weekend.

  2. Hanover holding a testimonial game for Dolo tomorrow. US Soccer should take note and give Dolo, Bocas and LA the send off they’ve earned.

  4. Not sure why they play in huge stadiums with small crowds. Maybe for the fields. Against Germany, Pugh showed good speed but her finishing let her down.

    • Watch the Women against china. They were shockingly bad against Germany. They cant play any worse but who knows. T,hey played like a bunch of college kids, which they are I guess.

    • I watched the US vs Germany game. It was a pathetic display of long balls and turnovers by the US team. The Germans were so much better technically. The US women have been surpassed by so many countries by now that it is going to be difficult to dominate unless significant changes are implemented. I can’t believe those players are the best the US has to offer.

      • Unfortunately, I agree. I watch a lot of USWNT and ACC college soccer games (for some reason, I can’t get into the NWSL). The US Women were much further ahead of the rest of the world because of US investment in women’s sports in 80’s and 90’s as well as the stigma against women playing soccer in a lot of other countries. As soon as that turned, in the 2000’s we are starting to see the technical proficiency of players in Brazil, Japan, Germany, France surpass that of Americans. Americans then start relying on their size and athleticism.

This an indictment of the US player development system. We need to somehow figure out how to produce more technically adept players for the USMNT and USWNT.
