SBI Tuesday Rewind: Klinsmann puts positive spin on Donovan criticism; more cities vie for MLS; and more

Ahead of Landon Donovan’s farewell match, coach Jurgen Klinsmann took an upbeat tone on giving the U.S. Men’s National Team legend a proper send-off — even after the Donovan had harshly criticized Klinsmann’s decisions during the World Cup. Klinsmann told reporters on Tuesday that the farewell match won’t be awkward in light of Donovan’s post-World Cup comments. Donovan’s reaction was “good” because it showed he cared, Klinsmann said.

Klinsmann was less upbeat about Major League Soccer’s scheduling, though. He called MLS scheduling games through FIFA dates a “lose-lose” situation that was compromising American players who balance club and country duty. He added that MLS’ schedule “is not working anymore.”

Meanwhile, more minor league clubs are fighting to prove they can be the next MLS expansion city. The San Antonio Scorpions put together a proposed expansion of their current stadium to show they are nearly ready for MLS-sized crowds. Also Tuesday, details of an upcoming MLS viability assessment in Sacramento were announced.

  1. While Klinsmann has a point, this year is especially tough for MLS, haven taken off a couple of weeks for the World Cup. Let’s see what MLS does in non-World Cup years. Of course, Klinsmann’s gonna run into trouble with the summer tournaments in years to come…Gold Cup, Copa America and Confederations Cup. Maybe, he needs to get his players some deals abroad….like the old days.

  2. Were Donovan’s criticisms really harsh? He was asked the question and gave his opinion. An opinion that pretty much half of the pundits shared.

    • The part where he called JK a pig _____er was disappointing, he should cut him some slack, that was only one drunken night in college.

But seriously, I assume half the reason he’s getting the sendoff is he was matter of fact and not particularly personal or obnoxious. However, particularly considering plenty of people were ready to carry his water, I’m not sure if he should have said a word, or much more than, “I’m disappointed but support the team.”

I still wonder where Boca’s sendoff is. He is still playing for the Team With No Name in LA. He was a consistent mainstay — in contrast to Landon sometimes disappearing for games or not playing defense — and captain of the team for several years. As a defender the distinction is somewhat irksome (however there was that whole central american mess).

      • JK didn’t go to college. He apprenticed as a baker. That’s where he gets his keen intellect from.

Agree on Boca; he was treated like dogpoo. Boca was commanding and keeping the back line organized as well as ever and certainly better than anyone who replaced him. His performance in the Jamaica WCQ was amazing and something that can’t be appreciated unless you were there, which I was.

      • I know, I was making an “experimented in college” joke. I assumed he was practically born receiving a paycheck for kicking a ball.

    • “…even after the Donovan had harshly criticized Klinsmann’s decisions during the World Cup…”
Deliberately misleading? Landon was acting as media analyst at the time, and criticism is part of analysis except for cheer-leaders. Many analysts came to the same conclusions.
