The San Jose Earthquakes have been given an injection of excitement late in a disappointing campaign.

Homegrown Player signing Tommy Thompson made his third consecutive start for the Earthquakes on Saturday, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake. Though he didn’t score, Thompson was important throughout and drew seven fouls for his squad.

The former Indiana Hoosier’s performance earned him SBI MLS Rookie of the Week. Thompson beat out Steve Birnbaum and Chris Duvall for this week’s honors.

  1. He’s been deserving of a couple of assists, including the header that he won over the much taller Borchers(?) and dropped on Wondo’s foot at the doorstep in this RSL match.

    • Oh were you watching Chris Rolfe in college? Because if you mean MLS, Rolfe joined the league in 2005 at the age of 22.

Thompson turned 19 just a couple weeks ago. He has basically played four MLS games…

Also Rolfe never really improved, his rookie year is pretty much the type of year you can expect from Rolfe when he’s playing well.

Thompson may have “no output” in a few games but he certainly has more upside.

  2. His career is in its infancy, but I dig what I’ve seen from him thus far. Excellent touch and a bulldog mentality. I hope he gets called up to the January camp, he’s got the skillset to be fast tracked to the national team
