With the European club seasons just a couple of weeks away from starting, many top teams around the world are getting into the heart of their preseason schedule.

Louis Van Gaal and Manchester United will look to build chemistry with some of their new signings as they take on Barcelona in Santa Clara, California, while Chelsea battle Paris Saint-Germain at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The weekend is also highlighted by the Emirates Cup, featuring Arsenal, Wolfsburg, Villarreal, and Werder Bremen, and former German champions Borussia Dortmund face Juventus in a friendly.

On Sunday in Philadelphia, Mexico and Jamaica do battle for a chance to reach the playoff game that will decide who reaches the 2017 Confederations Cup. The Gold Cup final is something of a surprise, as Mexico’s last three goals have all come on penalty kicks, two of them in controversial fashion, while Jamaica stunned the U.S. Men’s National Team, 2-1, in the semifinals.

Elsewhere, Liga MX gets underway this weekend, with defending champion Santos Laguna locking horns with Club Leon, and Club America visiting Puebla.

MLS action also continues this weekend. Real Salt Lake and Sporting KC meet in a re-match of the 2013 MLS Cup final, and the two new MLS expansion franchises, Orlando City and New York City FC, face each other at Yankee Stadium.

Comments

    • Fox ARE awful. Their decision making when it comes to soccer/football is nothing short of a disgrace.

To add insult to injury, they plan on showing the Bundesliga on Fox Sports 2 and on a channel that no one has or cares to pay for-Fox Soccer Plus.

And of course FIFA gave them the rights to the next 3 Word Cups…shocking!

  1. Gee, on Saturday the US vs. Panama game is on the same time as Barcelona vs. Man U in a meaningless friendly. I guess I’ll watch Barcelona vs. Man U. Likely to be more interesting.

    • You did notice that Fox Sports could’ve easily switched the U.S.-Panama game to FOX and dropped Man United-Barca to Fox Sports 2 and declined to, right? Looks like they’re thinking the same thing. Would’ve been interesting to see what they would’ve done had Mark Geiger not happened and the third-place game was U.S.-Mexico.

(Neither can go on Fox Sports 1 because of a baseball doubleheader, if you’re curious BTW.)
