Don’t look now, but the Montreal Impact are one of the Eastern Conference’s hottest teams heading into the final few regular season games.

The Impact increased their undefeated streak to five with a 2-1 home win against the Chicago Fire Wednesday evening.

Didier Drogba continued to impress, scoring yet another goal. However, the goal didn’t come without a bit of controversy.

David Accam eventually tied the match for the Fire, but substitute Andres Romero would give the fans at Stade Saputo something to cheer about — another win in the final stretch of the MLS season.

After a beautiful spell of possession in the 39th minute, Drogba scored from a header after a Nigel Reo-Coker cross from the right wing. He and Fire defender Jeff Larentowicz tangled around the six-yard box before the cross, and just before Drogba gave the Impact the lead, Larentowicz went to the ground, leaving the former Chelsea star wide open at the near post.

In the 50th minute, Gilberto sped down the left wing, but despite having a breakaway, his two efforts were for naught. Accam slipped into the scene, though, and pounced on the chance when his time came. Accam’s short header barely crossed the line, but it was enough to see the visitors level.

The Fire had a wonderful opportunity to take the lead as well, but Accam’s spectacular run into the box was nullified by a poor chip shot that sailed over the crossbar in the 73rd minute.

Three minutes later, Romero was played in behind the back line by Patrice Bernier, and Romero blasted an effort into the bottom-left corner for the game-winner.

With the game winding down, Laurent Ciman drew a second yellow and subsequent red card, meaning he will miss time for Montreal.

The Impact must quickly regroup, as they face D.C. United Saturday, while the Fire face Toronto FC the same day.

  1. Lets call it what it is… A Geiger-esk blown call, that resulted in an easy finish by Drogba. That being said, the Fire got what they deserved by once again not finishing their chances.

    • Yeah, it was less “Larentowicz went to the ground” & more “Lawrentowicz was thrown to the mat”. I lost respect for the Montreal crowd when by the end of the game they were booing Big Red’s every touch even though he was a victim of the most blatant missed call of the entire game.

      • Whether it’s that play or MJ pushing off of Russell in G6 of the 1998 NBA Finals, all time great players get calls in US sports leagues. Larentowics is a very good player, but not an all time great. Welcome to America

  2. So youre upset we don’t currently have one of the five best goalkeepers in the world? Also, what does this have to do with the Fire and Impact? take your whining where it belongs at least

  3. When are we going to have a goalkeeper that plays in one of the top 5 teams in the world, such as Keylor Navas in Real Madrid, and not in mid table average play-in-no-uefa-competition team? When are we gonna have a striker that plays in a top league and division team and scores constantly, and win games for his team, such as Chicharito in Leverkusen?
