Missing his team’s captain due to suspension, New York Red Bulls midfielder Sean Davis filled the void admirably to help his team clinch the league’s first playoff berth.

Filling in for Dax McCarty, Davis stepped right up to help anchor the Red Bulls’ midfield in a 2-0 road defeat of the Portland Timbers, earning Davis SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors.

Stationed in the center of midfield, Davis was one of the Red Bulls’ more active players on both sides of the ball. In the attack, Davis moved the ball well with a majority of his work coming in the Timbers’ half.

Nearly scoring the game’s first goal, Davis’ 22nd-minute effort was sent just wide, but it did send a warning shot for the Red Bulls’ barrage that would close the opening half. Defensively, Davis mopped up, providing six clearances, three of which were in his own box, and helping the Red Bulls maintain a valuable shutout.

With Davis’ performance, the Red Bulls were able to overcome the loss of their captain to claim three points and a playoff position. He beat out San Jose Earthquakes defender Fatai Alashe and Orlando City’s Cyle Larin for this week’s honors.

What did you think of Davis’ performance? Which player stood out to you this past weekend?

  1. Question for someone with more viewing experience than me.

Do you take Matt Polster or Sean Davis to Olympic Qualifying? Yes, I know it’s a foregone conclusion at this point, but I’m just curious as I’ve heard good things about both.
