Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

DeAndre Yedlin Sunderland celebration 22

DeAndre Yedlin went to Sunderland with the hopes of finding consistent playing time. Right now, he’s getting just that.

Yedlin started his third consecutive game for Sunderland on Saturday, and went the distance as the Black Cats picked up their first win of the Premiership campaign. Sunderland defeated 10-man Newcastle United, 3-0, and Yedlin helped the club post its first cleansheet of the season by manning his usual right back spot. The victory ended a nine-game winless run, and moved Sunderland to 18th place, two points away from safety.

It was not all good news in England. Geoff Cameron suffered an early injury in Stoke City’s 2-0 loss vs. Watford on Saturday, and had to be removed. Cameron was substituted nine minutes into the match because of a thigh injury, and was replaced by Marc Wilson. There is no exact word yet on how long Cameron will be out of action, but he is expected to miss out on Tuesday’s Capital One Cup clash with Chelsea.

A pair of Americans went at it in the Championship on Saturday. Tim Ream and Fulham prevailed in their match vs. Danny Williams and Reading, picking up a 4-2 victory at home to put a halt to a four-game skid. Ream played from whistle to whistle for the Cottagers while Williams started and lasted until the 86th minute.

  1. There are still a number of players from these leagues missing. Charlie Horton and Paul Rachubka in the Championship. Fafa Picault in 2. Bundesliga. Alex DeJohn in Norway.

  2. This just shows the drop in quality of the USMNT pool. I am a big MLS fan and have been for almost 20 years. However, the quality of play, although much higher than it was 15-10 years ago, is still not nearly on par with the top 6 leagues. We need a national team with players that are good enough to start and/or play regularly.

    • I agree with this but where are those players going to come from? MLS seems content in investing on over-priced foreign players to develop their brand rather than attempting to invest in local player development…the college system gives players a great education but costs them time and development years they can never get back. The club system in America (pay-for-play) is a complete joke and completely disregards those who cannot afford the insane fees. There’s a lot broken in our development system that needs fixing and the question is who has the stones to do it?

  3. Rangers with a perfect 33 points from 11 matches, with 34 goals for and 6 against. I wonder if they’ll become a target for American plays once again after returning to the SPL.

Other standings note- Gladbach is in 7th, but just 4 points out of 3rd and 3 points out of 4th, after a terrible start in the league. They could wind up returning to the Champions League, and if they get a luckier group draw than this year, I think they’re the kind of club that would have a chance of advancing out of the group.

  4. It is messed up how Alvardo has gone down in the pecking order for his team. Also are Stanko and Gooch with the reserves. Stanko should be on the same level as Bobby Wood, or at least making the first team.

  5. Perhaps it might be interesting to get updates on what the guys who don’t even dress are doing during the games, it could really spice up this dying section.

Ventura Alvarado washed and polished Jurgen Klinnsmanns car during Club America’s 1-0 loss vs Queretaro on Saturday

    and so on…

  6. Nor art should get brought into January camp now that he’s a regular starter for Molde. Young keeper starting in Europe is a great thing to have with Howard’s age and travel complaints as well as Guzan’s recent inconsistency

    • I’d have no problem bringing him in but he is playing a league that is below MLS standard so “starting in Europe” isn’t as impressive as it might otherwise sound.
