With his contract nearing its expiration date, Bobby Boswell could have been one of the first to test MLS’s new free-agent waters. Instead, the 32-year-old centerback has opted to remain with D.C. United.

The club announced on Monday that Boswell has signed a new contract that will keep him in D.C. for the foreseeable future. Boswell would have been eligible for the league’s newly-introduced free agency, which is available to players over 28-years-old with eight seasons of MLS experience, but chose to remain in the place where he has spent a portion of his career.

“We are thrilled to have secured Bobby’s continued commitment to D.C. United,” said Dave Kasper, the club’s general manager and vice president of soccer operations . “‎He has been one of the steadiest center backs in MLS throughout his career, and he has anchored the locker room and the defense since we brought him back to the nation’s capital last season.”

After initially departing D.C. United in 2007, Boswell returned to the club prior to the 2014 season and helped lead the team’s resurgence. Boswell, a 2014 finalist for MLS Defender of the Year, has started 32 of 33 matches for the club this year and leads the league in minutes played by a field player (2,885).

Boswell and playoff-bound D.C. United return to action on Sunday with a visit to the Columbus Crew in the regular-season finale.

What do you think of Boswell’s decision to re-sign? What are your expectations for the centerback and D.C. United heading into the postseason?

    • Is he a little slower these days? Yeah sure, but he was always slow. Still a decent soccer head on his shoulders. Overall good move for DC!
