David Beckham’s MLS Miami team might still be more of an idea than anything, but that is apparently not stopping one of the world’s most prolific players from wanting to join the club.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is interested in playing for Beckham’s Miami franchise, and has already applied for a visa to work in the United States, according to a report from French outlet L’Equipe. Ibrahimovic is set to be a free agent next summer, and is interested in joining his former teammate’s proposed franchise in Miami.

The problem that report does not mention, however, is that Beckham’s club is not expected to begin play in 2016. Beckham recently stated that his ownership group was targeting a 2018 start date, and the global icon still needs to come to terms on a stadium deal before MLS officially awards him an expansion team.

Ibrahimovic, 34, has been linked with a move to MLS for several months now. The Swede said during the summer that he would like to play the U.S., and there was a report in early October that claimed that Orlando City made contact with him.

Ibrahimovic has scored seven goals in as many Ligue 1 games for PSG this season. The club currently sits in first place.

What do you think of Ibrahimovic being linked with a move to Miami? Don’t see how it is possible given Beckham’s club’s expected start date? Think Orlando City could be Ibrahimovic’s next home?

  1. If he was going through the visa process, it wasn’t for a nonexistent team (more likely OC), and he’d have to start that over seeking a visa for another potential employer/ at a different time.

It sounds nice in theory but by the time Miami MIGHT be playing (2018) he’d be like 36 or 37 and even if he’s playing well for an older player now, it’s a poorer and poorer bet every passing year.

Also, as with other players I have heard of proposing a summer 2018 move, I think that is the post-World Cup short end of the stick and relying heavily on them playing well/not embarrassing themselves at the tournament. Or even making their team. By the time the long awaited Kaka to OC move happened he was cut from the Brazil world cup team.

It would be better for the league if he joined now or ASAP (I don’t know when his contract is up) and gave us a few years while playing well. We need more Giovincos and Henrys who commit here for a while and less people capping their career with a short US stint and a payday. Let the Cosmos sign broken down 37 year olds who want to live here for a couple years without regard to their remaining playing quality.
