Cyle Larin certainly exceeded the hype that came with his first overall selection at the 2015 MLS Draft.

The Orlando City forward was recognized for his record-breaking season on Tuesday, as Larin was named MLS Rookie of the Year. With the victory, Larin becomes just the second-ever player to win as a member of an expansion side, following Maurice Edu’s 2007 recognition.

Larin received 96.38 percent of club votes, 97.18 percent of media votes and 82.39 of player votes, ensuring a landslide victory over fellow rookies Fatai Alashe and Matt Polster, who finished second and third, respectively.

“I would like to thank the fans, who have been there for us all season. I wouldn’t have this award if it wasn’t for them,” said Larin. “Secondly I’d like to thank all of my teammates who have been behind me throughout the entire season and provided the assists for my goals.

“I’d also like to thank the entire technical staff. I don’t think I’d be in this position without them giving me the opportunity and believing in me. Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone throughout the league who voted for me. This award truly means a lot to me.”

In his debut 2015 season, Larin netted 17 goals, tying him for fifth in the league behind Sebastian Giovinco, Kei Kamara, Robbie Keane and David Villa. The 17 finishes were enough to break the rookie scoring record, which was formerly held by fellow UConn product Damani Ralph.

“We’re delighted for Cyle to win Rookie of the Year after his incredible first season in MLS,” said Orlando City head coach Adrian Heath. “Since he’s come on board, Cyle has really made an effort to learn and grow as a professional each day, and it’s certainly showed in his play on the field. His future is very bright if he continues to progress at this rate.”

What do you think of Larin’s victory? How does he stack up to the best rookies in MLS history?
