Saturday Ticker: Vardy breaks EPL record; Barca pounds Sociedad; and more

An inconceivable story became that much more incredible on Saturday.

Jamie Vardy has been the main storyline this English Premier League campaign, and even during a 1-1 tie with Manchester United at King Power Stadium, his goal was the focal point.

That’s because Vardy’s first-half tally broke former Man United star Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in 10 consecutive matches. Vardy has now scored a goal in 11 straight games for Leicester City during the 2015-16 season.

Unfortunately for the home side, Bastian Schweinsteiger leveled the score before halftime with a powerful close-range header from a corner kick. Both sides had opportunities to push ahead in the second half, but neither could find the back of the net again.

With the tie, Man United falls to third, Leicester City sits in second and Manchester City — who defeated Southampton, 3-1 — jumps into first on the EPL table.

Here are some more news and notes:

NEYMAR WANTS CONTRACT EXTENSION AFTER SCORING BRACE

Neymar is arguably the hottest player in the world at the moment, and he is hoping to finalize a new deal with Barcelona that will see him stay for years to come.

Following Barcelona’s 4-0 win against Real Sociedad at Camp Nou on Saturday, Neymar told reporters after the game that he hopes to continue scoring and excelling with his Barca teammates for many years.

“I still have some years left on my contract,” Neymar said. “I know my father speaks about my future. We are talking about extending the contract, because that is what I want to do.”

This development comes on the heels of his father stating the 23-year-old Brazilian may opt to move clubs if his current tax issues are not resolved. Neymar’s current deal runs until 2018.

Meanwhile, teammates Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi also scored in the team’s romp vs. Real Sociedad.

ATLETICO MADRID’S TIAGO SUFFERS BROKEN LEG

Atletico Madrid ended up the victor on Saturday, but a key piece of its starting lineup suffered a huge blow.

The Spanish club confirmed after the match that midfielder Tiago suffered a fracture to his right tibia during the 1-0 win against Espanyol.

“The final medical report indicates that he suffers a non-displaced fracture to the middle third of the right tibia,” a release from the club said.

“The midfielder will undergo surgery on Sunday, the 29th of November at Majadahonda’s Fremap Clinic.”

With the win, Atletico Madrid remains four points behind Barcelona on the Liga BBVA table.

  1. One between Bayern Munchen and Barcelona is bound to win the Champions League.

Those two clubs are so dominant at the moment, it’s hard to imagine any other team lifting the trophy a the moment.

Today was my first full90 minutes watching Manchester United. They are awful-we are talking vomit-inducing unwatchable stuff. Their place at the table is simply a testament of how poor the Premier League is at the moment.
