Montreal Impact captain Patrice Bernier was not consistently starting games in the final run of the MLS regular season, but the Canadian national team midfielder has seen an outstanding resurgence in form during the MLS Cup Playoffs.

In two postseason games over the span of four days, Bernier has recorded two goals and an assist to put the Impact in great position to advance to the Eastern Conference finals. His superb play in both games earns him honors as SBI MLS Player of the Week.

On Thursday night against Toronto FC, Bernier opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a finessed finish. The captain was again instrumental in his side’s third goal, retrieving the rebound from his own shot and crossing it to the far post for Didier Drogba to smash home.

That game-changing performance paved the way for another huge evening by Bernier on Sunday in Montreal.

Just after Federico Higuain scored a talented volley to earn the Columbus Crew an important away goal, Bernier stepped up for his side yet again.

Bernier leaped over his defender to fire home a powerful header from a corner kick to level the score before Johan Venegas scored the go-ahead goal with a hard-fought solo effort in the second half.

Bernier was certainly not the only player to come up big for his team this week, though. Portland Timbers goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey, Seattle Sounders attackers Clint Dempsey and Andreas Ivanschitz, and Vancouver Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted all worked wonders to help their team in the postseason.

What did you think of Bernier’s performances this week? Which player stood out most to you in this first week of MLS playoff action?
