UCL Rewind: Barca drub Roma, Arsenal still in race; and more

Barcelona was held to a draw by Roma thanks to a wonder goal, Arsenal was defeated, and more in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League action.

The European giants ran rampant on Tuesday across the UEFA Champions League, with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea all posting huge victories.

The most important result on the day came for Arsenal, though, as the Gunners decisively defeated Dinamo Zagreb in a must-win match to advance to the Round of 16. Alexis Sanchez scored a brace and added an assist for Nacho Monreal’s goal in the English side’s 3-0 home win.

Elsewhere, Lionel Messi popped up twice in his first start in over two months while Luis Suarez added a spectacular brace in Barcelona’s 6-1 romp against Roma. Defenders Gerard Pique and Adriano also got on the scoreboard for the Spanish giants. Edin Dzeko scored a consolation goal at the death for Roma.

Also in need of a victory on Tuesday, Chelsea cruised to a 4-0 win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv, which was reduced to 10 men before halftime and never posed much of a threat. Gary Cahill started off the scoring, following up his own headed attempt off of a corner. Willian then scored his sixth free kick goal of the season with a spectacular effort, Oscar headed home, and John Terry’s replacement, Kurt Zouma, also nodded home for his first Champions League goal.

Bayern Munich was also victorious by the same mark, defeating Olympiakos to stay atop Group F. Douglas Costa fired home first, Robert Lewandowski put away yet another goal, and Thomas Muller finished off an Arjen Robben assist all in the first 20 minutes. Holger Badstuber saw red in the second half, but Kingsley Coman finished off the huge win with a 70th-minute header.

Meanwhile, Zenit St. Petersburg extended its massive lead in Group H with a 2-0 triumph vs. Valencia. FC Porto wasn’t as good on the day, as it failed to secure a spot in the Round of 16 after falling at home, 2-0, to Dynamo Kiev. The day’s other matches saw Bayer Leverkusen keep its knockout round hopes alive with a 1-1 draw at BATE Borisov, and KAA Gent move into second place in Group H with a 2-1 away win over Lyon.
