FC Dallas made it clear on Friday that it had a plan in mind by trading up to acquire the first overall selection in the MLS Re-Entry Draft.

That plan turned out to be selecting Maximiliano Urruti.

In Phase 1 of the Re-Entry Draft, FC Dallas nabbed Urruti, the Portland Timbers forward and MLS champion who was only one of two selections on the day. The other player selected on Friday was Chicago Fire goalkeeper Alex Kann, who was scooped up by Sporting Kansas City.

As a result, FC Dallas and Sporting KC will exercise their respective acquired player’s option.

Players left unclaimed move on to Stage 2 of the Re-Entry Draft, which is set to be held next Thursday.

Urruti joins FC Dallas after making 67 MLS appearances with the Timbers. The Argentine has netted 15 goals while adding five assists in his time in the league.

Kann, meanwhile, arrives in Sporting KC with just one Fire appearance to his name, although the 25-year-old goalkeeper has enjoyed productive loan spells with the Charlotte Eagles and St. Louis FC.

What do you think of Friday’s selections? Surprised to see so few names taken? Like FC Dallas’ addition of Urruti? What players do you expect to be taken early in Stage 2?

  1. Maxi to Dallas is a great move, his stats are equal or better than Blas/Tex at a much lower salary. Hopefully he isn’t the only quality striker brought in as CCL/USOC extra games will need FCD to use more than Urruti/Tesho/Craft.
