For a handful of young, talented U.S. players, 2015 has been a year to remember.

Matt Miazga was one of those players.

Miazga enjoyed a meteoric rise in 2015 at both the club and international levels, and was awarded U.S. Soccer’s Young Male Player of the Year honors on Friday as a result.

The 20-year-old New Jersey native wasn’t expected to start with the New York Red Bulls this year, but found himself as a starter and integral part of the MLS side that won the Supporters’ Shield. Miazga was also called into the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team for the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, where he helped the Americans reached the quarterfinals.

Miazga then took another step up and appeared in all five games with the U-23 team during its CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying campaign. By November, U.S. senior head coach Jurgen Klinsmann had seen enough of Miazga at the younger levels and decided to integrate him into the full team, calling the centerback into camp ahead of the team’s two World Cup qualifying matches against St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Trinidad & Tobago.

Coming on as a substitute in the second half of the first qualifier vs. St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Miazga played for three different U.S. teams in 2015. The senior appearance also permanently cap-tied him to the American cause.

U.S. Soccer also honored Mallory Pugh as the 2015 U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year and Kevin Hensley as the Young Disabled Player of the Year.

What do you think of Miazga winning the Young Male award? Think he deserved it? What other U.S. youngsters impressed you this year?
