Geoff Cameron has a nagging injury that he just can’t seem to recover from, and it’s aggravating him.

According to Stoke City manager Mark Hughes, the 30-year-old American defender and midfielder is not close to returning to the first team because he is still recovering from an ankle injury he suffered against Liverpool in the first leg of the English League Cup semifinals on Jan. 5.

“He’s not progressing as quickly as we would like and Geoff would like himself to be perfectly honest,” Hughes told the club’s website on Thursday.  “He’s a little bit impatient about it at the moment but it’s one of those injuries where we felt it could either be resolved quickly or drag on a little bit.

“We’ll get to the bottom of it though, we’ve got an idea about what’s going on and now it’s just which way we go with it really. He’s a little bit frustrated at the moment but he’ll be okay.”

Cameron has missed six games for Stoke across all competitions since the injury. The versatile U.S. Men’s National Team defender has started in 18 games for the English Premier League club this season, but will be unavailable against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

What do you think of this development? When do you think Cameron will be back in action for Stoke?

  1. At this point in the season and in Geoff’s career it is important for him to take the time he needs to recover from the injury and not try to rush things. His club & the USMNT need him healthy down the stretch this season and this summer. If he pushes things too quickly he could wind up with a more serious ankle injury and be out long term.

    • Agree. This would also be a good time for him to reflect on his facial hair choices. He should realize that he has not been blessed with the genetics to grow an attractive beard and would benefit from another style of facial grooming.
