NYCFC acquires Jack Harrison in 2016 MLS Draft dominated by trades

With the first two rounds of the 2016 MLS Draft in the books, there was a common theme in Baltimore on Thursday: trades aplenty.

After being selected first overall in this year’s draft by the Chicago Fire, Wake Forest midfielder Jack Harrison wound up with the club that wanted him all along, New York City FC. The two sides traded picks, NYCFC owning the fourth pick, and the Fire acquired the selection of Stanford defender Brandon Vincent.

The Philadelphia Union made tons of noise early on, accumulating four of the draft’s first 23 picks. Jim Curtin’s team acquired defenders Joshua Yaro, Keegan Rosenberry and Taylor Washington, as well as Creighton forward Fabian Herbers.

Columbus Crew and the Montreal Impact followed in the footsteps of the Union, capitalizing on four selections each of their own. The Crew most notably added Rodrigo Saravia and Chase Minter, while the Impact brought in defensive help with Clemson defender Kyle Fisher.

While many teams were able to stockpile picks and fill areas of need on Thursday, Sporting Kansas City and the LA Galaxy were shut out of the first and second rounds, although both teams have actively pursued players in other ways this offseason.

Here’s a full rundown of the first and second rounds of the 2016 MLS Draft (* indicates a player on a Generation adidas contract):

  1. Chicago picked Jack Harrison with the 1st overall pick, and then traded him to NYC for Brandon Vincent, the 4th overall pick? I don’t get it.

Wouldn’t it have been simpler for Chicago to just take Vincent to begin with? Perhaps they got some additional compensation from NYC.
