While 2016 will be an important year for the U.S. Men’s National Team as it continues preparations for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, its youth teams have just as much at stake.

On Saturday, U.S. Under-20 coach Tab Ramos announced his 36-man roster for the team’s upcoming January camp in Miami, Florida. In addition to the side’s training, Ramos’ crew will play four matches to kick off the new year.

The Under-20s will begin play on Jan. 8 against CASA (3 p.m.), before facing NPSL side Weston FC later that day at 5 p.m. The Americans will then play again four days later in two more matches with their opponents yet to be determined.

All matches are set to be played at Barry University, a private college located in Miami.

This group of talent will begin its preparations for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea. In 2015, Ramos’ side advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup before being eliminated dramatically on penalty kicks by eventual winners Serbia.

Here is the complete rundown of selections chosen by Tab Ramos:

    • Just watched a Pac12 TV post game interview video on Cal Bears website, and he seems very confident – almost a little cocky. However, in all honesty, that describes a lot of (if not most) players on my University/Club/high school teams – which were all really good teams. A lot of good players and a little cocky ( I know I was 😉 ).

    • From what I’ve heard he’s got some talent. He had a several offers, both professional and collegiate, so at least scouts somewhere rate him. Definitely deserves to be considered a part of the pool of potential players this U-20 cycle. And as some one else alluded to earlier, competition will sort it out from there.

Its a small sample size, but here’s a clip from the U-18’s vs Germany https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZivwPfd30k0&feature=youtu.be&t=51s. Two huge saves from him about a minute in.

  1. Is the purpose of this U20 camp to evaluate “new” potential additions to the U20 pool? I see only a few players from the U17’s in this camp. Players Like Pulisic, whose team Dortmund is on winter break and Haji Wright (unattached) would be welcome additions.

    • This camp seems seems like this camp if mainly to expand the pool, not cohesion. Guys like Pulisic and Wright are known quantities. Theyalready have a strong presence in the youth program, due to being a part of that U17 cycle you mentioned. Ramos probably already knows what those guys can bring to the table.

This camp seems to be more for the guys who were too old to be a part of the U17 squad, but are still young enough for the U20’s. Someone who fits this description that is excluded is Mukwelle Akale of Villareal Juvenil A. Really good attacking player who can play across the front line. Villareal hold him in the same regard as Pulisic at BVB.

I really hope Akale/Pulisic can replace the Donovan/Dempsey rivalry.
