Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

Alejandro Bedoya FC Nantes 85

Alejandro Bedoya’s goal-scoring total continues to rise, and he will have another chance to add to it as his red-hot club returns to the field on Saturday.

Bedoya will attempt to keep his recent run of form going when FC Nantes welcomes Lorient to town in a match-up of two clubs seeking a place in Europe. Nantes is currently just three points shy of Ligue 1’s lone UEFA Champions League qualifying spot, and will certainly not mind seeing Bedoya find the back of the net of the net for the fifth time in seven matches. Winning, however, is top priority as the Canaries are on a 14-game unbeaten streak across all competitions that stretches back to Nov. 21 and has them thinking of a top three finish.

Omar Gonzalez, who like Bedoya scored his last time out, should also be in action. Pachuca is set to lock horns with Puebla on Valentine’s Day, and the home game could see Gonzalez and Los Tuzos move into Liga MX’s top spot. Pachuca would not only have to defeat Puebla for that to happen, but league leader Monterrey would also have to slip against Santos Laguna on Friday night.

If you are wondering what other player is worth keeping an eye on, look no further than Desevio Payne. FC Groningen and Payne square off against second-placed Eredivisie club, Ajax, and likely need at least a point in order to avoid falling out of the UEFA Europa League picture. Payne has been starting more often than not in recent weeks for FC Groningen, but may have arguably his biggest test of the season coming up.

    • Emmanuel Eboue is currently training with Sunderland, too (free agent).

Of course, Eboue plays the same position as Yedlin. Either that would pave the way for Yedlin to move to the midfield as you suggest or create more competition to find the pitch.

      • He can do a job in midfield but I still think he’s best suited to play RB. I have no idea what Billy Jones is preferred to Yedlin. I don’t think I’ve seen a game where he didn’t booked.
