Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Christian Pulisic Borussia Dortmund 19

If there were any lingering thoughts about Christian Pulisic’s cameo last week serving as just a one-off for the promising youngster, they were put to bed this weekend.

Pulisic played for Borussia Dortmund for the second straight game, as he once again came off the bench in the club’s scoreless draw with Hertha Berlin on Saturday. As was the case in his debut a week prior, the 17-year-old midfielder entered the game in the second half. Pulisic played 19 minutes, three less than in his first outing, but that he saw the field again against the German Bundesliga’s third-placed team seems to indicate that he is in very good standing with Dortmund right now.

DeAndre Yedlin also provided an encouraging development for U.S. Men’s National Team fans by playing in his first game for Sunderland in almost a month. Yedlin snapped an inactive streak that dated back to Jan. 9 in Sunderland’s 2-2 road draw vs. Liverpool, turning in a 15-minute shift as a substitute on Saturday. Yedlin and Sunderland trailed, 2-0, when he entered the field, but the Black Cats managed to pull off a late rally to earn themselves a crucial point in their battle against relegation.

As far as goal-scorers go, Bobby Wood and Omar Gonzalez both found the back of the net with clutch equalizers. Wood scored a neat tying goal in the 87th minute of FC Union Berlin’s 2-2 stalemate with Kaiserslautern on Friday, and Gonzalez pulled his club, Pachuca, level with his first Liga MX tally in the 88th minute of Sunday’s 1-1 draw vs. Pumas UNAM.

What do you think of these performances? Do you see Pulisic continuing to earn minutes in the coming weeks? Is Yedlin ready to break back into Sunderland’s lineup?

    • Great site name especially considering your comment was full of hot air….if you’ve heard something that others haven’t then I apologize but otherwise please don’t make stuff up

  1. With Zouma injured am I right in thinking that Miazga is the only other center back on the roster other than Cahill and Terry? Seems like he has a decent chance of seeing some action.

      • One can only hope. I won’t lie, my first thought after seeing Zouma injure himself was cringe, and then instantly thinking about Miazga’s chances for minutes going way higher this season.

Depending on the type of/if he gets minutes will be very telling for his near future. If they give him some decent minutes now, then they rate him high. If he continues being depth, then I foresee Miazga going the long-term loan route.

    • issue is that Miazga is in pre-season. It will be hard for him to break through being in pre-season form on a team that is a bad month away from being in a relegation fight.

  2. I would take Geoff Cameron ( when healthy) and John brooks pairing right now with miazga and CCV pushing them in the near future. Besler and Gonzalez as strong backup options

    • Him and Besler or Brooks should be the pairing for every meaningful National Team game this year. Time for some consistency.

      • So long as they are healthy Besler, Brooks, Cameron, & Gonzalez are the 4 1st Choice CBs for the remainder of the year. However, IF we qualify for the Olympics than I could see Brooks participate in the summer games instead of at the Copa America.
Primary alternates/replacements for injuries IMO would be Alvarado, Miazga, & Birnbaum.

  3. Lots of min all around. I watched Dortmund vs Hertha to see Pulisic.. he had a good but uneventful 19 min but Jon Brooks stole the show. Dominating in defense and nearly got a goal or two off of corners.

Worried about the goalkeepers; Guzan benched now? On a team destined for relegation.. is he going to be our starter this summer? Howard isn’t in a great spot either

    • I’m not overly concerned about our keepers in England. Howard may have slipped a bit recently but he’s still very good. Guzan’s situation at AV has less to do with his play and more to do with the crappy defense in front of him. The coach has tried changing up his defenders in order to get points, and when that didn’t work he started rotating the Keeper. Long term…hopefully Guzan gets out of AV when they get Relegated.

I’m more concerned with our defense. Only Brooks is really playing well. Alvarado & Gonzalez have been up and down. Cameron is still injured, Chandler has been sidelined for a while as has Yedlin. Villafana is still an unknown, but hopefully earn a shot.
