European Weekend Preview: Man City-Leicester City; Leverkusen-Bayern and more

The European club season is hitting a critical stage as teams jockey for position at the top of the table, while many sides will be looking to distance themselves from the relegation zone.

English Premier League leader Leicester City will continue its historic campaign on Saturday against Manchester City. The Foxes enter this weekend’s meeting three points above Manuel Pellegrini’s City side.

Bayern Munich will meet Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, with both sides currently in the Bundesliga’s top four spots. Bayern sits eight points clear of second-place Borussia Dortmund at the top of the league table.

In Spain, Atletico Madrid looks to get back on the winning track against Eibar after a draining 2-1 loss to Barcelona last weekend.

Juventus will put its 13-match Serie A win streak on the line this weekend against Frosinone. The Bianconeri last faced defeat in league play on Oct. 28 against Sassuolo.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

With a win against Southampton and a Manchester United loss versus Chelsea, West Ham United can capture the fifth spot in the Premier League this weekend.

Everton is coming off of a 3-0 midweek victory against Newcastle, and now Roberto Martinez’s side is looking to make a leap into the top 10. The Toffees will collide with 10th-place Stoke City on Saturday.

SPANISH LA LIGA

La Liga leader Barcelona will travel to last-place Levante on Sunday, as Luis Enrique’s side looks to extend its lead at the top of Spain’s top flight. The Blaugrana have recorded an astounding 27-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, dating back to the side’s last loss to Sevilla in early October.

Sevilla and Celta Vigo are in the thick of things for Spain’s two Europa League positions. The two sides will go at this weekend, looking to establish themselves in those spots.

Borussia Dortmund has scored 52 goals this season, the most of any Bundesliga side. Second-place Dortmund will travel to third place Hertha Berlin on Saturday, who looks to solidify its UEFA Champions League position in Germany.

Schalke 04 will host Wolfsburg this weekend, with both clubs pushing for spots in Europe’s top competitions.

Mid-table club Bologna will host third-place side Fiorentina, currently eight points out of first place. The Viola are unbeaten in three straight Serie A matches.

The matchup of the weekend provides two teams in the top three, when second-place AS Monaco hosts third-place Nice. Hatem Ben Afra, who has scored 11 goals this season, will be one to watch for Nice up front.
