Jozy Altidore started 2016 in impressive fashion, but things have taken a frustrating turn.

Altidore has suffered his latest hamstring injury, and is a question mark for Toronto FC’s season opener on March 6. The 26-year-old forward started feeling some discomfort on Tuesday, and did not play in the club’s preseason match on Wednesday.

Altidore, who dropped 10 pounds this offseason to try and prevent muscle injuries, has had a history of hamstring problems. His most recent one came last season while playing with Toronto FC and just ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, from which he was sent home early due to a lack of sharpness. Prior to that, he sustained injuries at the 2014 World Cup and 2011 Gold Cup.

This injury, like the others before it, comes at a very inopportune time for Altidore. Apart from now being in doubt for Toronto FC’s road game against the New York Red Bulls, Altidore is now in jeopardy of missing the U.S. Men’s National Team’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Guatemala in late March.

Altidore recently played for the U.S. in a pair of friendlies, and found the back of the net against both Iceland and Canada.

What do you think of Altidore suffering another hamstring injury? How will Toronto FC cope without him? See him getting called up to the USMNT next month?

  1. I thought, Oh no, not again. The good news, however, is that he stopped when he felt discomfort. so hopefully he hasn’t had a pull and could be okay with a week or 10 days of rest. And Klinsmann needs to bring in Dempsey for Guatemala for insurance purposes.

  2. WOW, he has to be blown by yet another hamstring injury! It makes you wonder if this is the beginning of a chronic injury that could set him back not only this season but also for the forseeable future. JK can’t be happy either but on the bright side it gives the younger forwards a chance to show and prove!

  3. Damn he was starting to look like the AZ Altidore….Was really looking forward to seeing and evaluating a “light weight” and more agile Altidore in action this year.
No real worries tho. We still have Dempsey (looking nice), Bobby Wood, Fabian Johnson and Alejandro Bedoya to provide goals.
Hope this hamstring “injury” is minor or just a precaution

  4. One time I went to one of those Asian massage/acupuncture places to get my hamstrings worked on. When a bunch of hot to semi-hot half-naked Asian ladies got in front of me in a line and the owner asked me to pick which one I “liked”, I knew that my hamstrings weren’t going to get any better on that particular night…

  5. Can we move on from Jozy? Let’s give him a year off from the National Team. Work with other options up top. I don’t want a 80% Jozy heading into qualifiers.

    • i’d love to see bobby being “way better” than jozy, but wouldn’t hold my breath.

i am looking forward to klinsmann being forced to play someone besides jozy and dempsey (heard he wasn’t expected to be called up vs. guatemala) up top some more. jozy’s the safe option, but if he gets injured long-term, i wouldn’t want to have to rely on an aging dempsey (although he doesn’t really seem to be slowing down yet).

so yes, bring on bobby wood, aj (once he’s fit), and i’d like to see zardes up top some more as well.

      • See Holland and Germany matches from last spring. For the record, I’ve been a long-time Jozy supporter, BUT he often disappears in matches and he has a record of being injury prone (see Brazil) when he is needed. Wood, Morris, and some of the other younger players give us DIFFERENT more mobile options and make our attack far less predictable.

      • saw them. he scored late goals in friendlies after 6 subs were made–which is better than not scoring them, but shouldn’t tell you much.

as i said, i’d love for bobby (or any of our other forwards) to be better than jozy, or–as you say–just *different*. just think that people underestimate what jozy brings, which is why klinsmann keeps starting him.
