Julian Green nets twice in Bayern Munich II victory

julian green

In his team’s second game following the winter break, Julian Green stole the show to lead Bayern Munich II to victory.

The U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team midfielder netted a pair of goals on Friday to lead Bayern Munich II to a victory over Rain/Lech.

Down a goal in the second half, Bayern equalized through Green in the 52nd minute by heading home a corner kick. Following another Bayern tally via a penalty kick, Green removed all doubt in the 73rd minute by firing home a pass from Milos Pantovic for his second goal of the game.

With the pair of goals, Green now has four goals in his last four games and seven in his last eight games on the club level.

What do you think of Green’s latest performance? What do you expect from him this year?

  1. Yes…. too much hype too soon. Clearly the kid has talent….. enough to stand out among US National youth, but- one of many in Bundesliga development. So… any luck, he forgets the unrealistic press from off kilter US Soccer… resolve, discipline and other attributes best be there too in order to stand out.

But you know….. one swing to excess doesn’t have to provoke another. Writing off a 20 year old holding his own on the reserves for a top side in the world is every bit as ignorant as overhyping him. By any stretch of the imagination- its not a bad place to be at that age. I only hope he takes the next step…. likely a move to a mid table Bundesliga team. Where hopefully he takes the next, next step.

  2. I would actually love to see him in MLS. It would be a great measuring stick for him. Right now playing for Bayern 2 is not really showing anyone anything. His failed loan a while ago was also not really his fault. He got no playing time!

    • Unfortunately, Green is the one who chose to play for Bayern II this season. Smart, not Smart? Who knows. At minimum, another season on a reserve squad seems to have at least boosted his confidence once again. That is a good thing.

His season at Hamburg was disappointing. Victim of a bad situation, but according to published reports, also not entirely faultless for his inability to impress any of the 3 coaches for that season.

His next career move will be very interesting and critical to his development and place on the USMNT U-23’s.

    • I don’t think they would though. MLS requires all loaners to have an option to buy, which I don’t think Bayern would be willing to extend.

It’s a pity…MLS probably needs to relax that rule, especially for young players in the USMNT setup who could really use the developmental minutes…but can’t get them because the American domestic league isn’t allowed to develop them. This is one area where MLS and the USSF could really stand to work together a little better.

  3. Well this guy has proven he can score against fourth division part-timers but unfortunately that’s all he’s proven at this point and he’ll be 21 in a few months.

      • I’m sure that you would agree that he has maximized that 1 moment of quality without building on it since. Time to earn his spot onto the U-23 Olympic playoff squad (which it looks like he has) then eventually another look at the senior team, rather than to continue to live off of 1 promising moment.

      • Not to mention the one promising moment was a shank that he got lucky on. Or that those 15 minutes against Belgium were the only time in a USMNT that he’s looked like he belonged on a soccer field.

      • Slow- Call it lucky or whatever, but he still made a great run and cut inside that no other USMNTer was making all night (you know, an intelligent, defense-splitting run); put himself in a position to receive Bradley’s Ball; and shank or not, he still put the ball IN THE GOAL.

The fact that you’re reaching for excuses like “shanking the ball” just reinforces how nearly-perfect that play was; from Green’s vision and finish, to Bradley’s recognition and delivery.

    • It’s a little early to give up on this guy. When Dempsey was 20 he was still playing in college; he was drafted when he was 21 and then played his rookie season for the Revs. I wonder if Bayern II is better or worse than the Revs in 2004. Whatever, Bayern Munich is one of the top 4 or 5 teams in the world, so not making their senior roster at 20 years old is no shame.

      • That’s one way to spin it but he failed on loan last year and I guess no one wanted him this year. The hype on this kid was ridiculous and, as it turns out, totally unjustified.

      • @slowleftarm- If you want to blame Klinsmann for creating that hype, then fine. He should shoulder that. However any bitterness towards Green I don’t think is fair or his fault. He’s just a young player trying his best to make it.

      • I agree. Way too early to give up on Green.

It’s too early to say that the hype was unjustified. World Cup spots are not gifted to unproven 19 year olds without a skill set that is worth taking a chance on for future rewards.

Green was rushed and it has certainly been proven that he is not yet an international caliber player. Only time will tell if the performance will eventually match the hype.

Give the kid a couple more years to work his way to higher caliber competition to hopefully one day show the quality that his skill set must indicate that is possible.

      • Regarding the hype for Green, I remember when a lot of the posters here were part of that hype as they got all excited about a kid so young who had the support of Pep Guardiola. Fans tend to over react both positively and negatively. We need to keep perspective and context and have realistic expectations.

      • Slow,

Do you enjoy being an a.s.s.hole? The kid is 20 years let him continue to develop. The failure at Hamburg was falling out with the new coach (he played until he got injured). Even Bayern was annoyed with the coach. People here tend to hype young players that have not done anything yet. He played couple games for the 3rd best team in the world at 18. He has potential and has done more than most USMNT players have ever done at 18/19/20. Pep spoke glowingly of him, so I believe Pep and he has potential. He may never be a star, but he may turn out to be solid winger in the Bundesliga, which is excellent for us.

      • “World Cup spots are not gifted to unproven 19 year olds without a skill set that is worth taking a chance on for future rewards.” Actually that’s exactly what happened. He’s in the exact same spot he was in two years ago.

      • “Actually that’s exactly what happened. He’s in the exact same spot he was in two years ago.”

        slow,

although i tend to agree that klinsmann took green to brasil as an “incentive” for him choosing the usmnt, gary’s point still stands: klinsmann wouldn’t have made the (alleged) agreement if green didn’t have the potential for high reward. i’d also argue that bayern wouldn’t keep him around if green wasn’t worth it, either.

leading to my next point, which is: seriously? you’re complaining that green *still* can’t make it into bayern’s first team at age 20? yeah, what a complete failure.

    • I imagine when he scored that goal against Belgium, as the majority of Americans cheered you were sulking and thinking about ways to ridicule the kid on SBI.

      • Nope I was celebrating like anyone else but he hasn’t done a thing in the two years since so how can he keep living on 15 good minutes against Belgium? Even the goal was a shank. Nice run to get in that position but total luck that it went in.

    • Slo, if you’re American than get off the couch and try out for the USMNT. Otherwise, shut the hell up because we don’t want supporters like you. No one likes a hater. Except Trump supporters.

      • and why wouold he need to get of the couch to try out for the team?? He’s making an honest assessment of what has happened with this kid in a 2 year period, and he’s right! People give their honest opinions/assessment on this site all the time, this time is no different but it seems people can’t handle the truth! Nobody is giving up on the JG, he does seem to have some promise but his time at Hamburg was a bust, he didn’t llo like he belonged on the field at times, so how do those performances have anything to do with his relationship with the coach? Reports stated that he was arrogant and didnt train hard because he was a Bayern Munich academy prospect, had seen some minutes in the Champions League thus he thought he was owed minutes. You still have to go out on the field and show and prove and he didnt, but at the same time it doesnt mean he won’t come good eventually!

  4. Hopefully it will lead to some minutes with Bayern as the season ends since they should clinch the title with at least a month to spare and they should have plenty of cup games remaining too.

    • Unfortunately, I’m guessing that will be unlikely. Robben and Ribery are healthy now, so BM are two deep at both wide attacking positions with Kingsly and Costa, so they’ll be minimal chance at PT. I’m guessing BM will want to showcase Robben and Ribbery too, since they fit the mold for a potential Chinese club payday

    • Yeah, Unfortunately, bayern are a lot deeper on the wings this year. Last year he had a good shot at getting games this time of year; this year will be much more difficult.

Still should see some type of minutes, even if only to shop him around for interested buyers.

  5. Very good news for the young man. Seems like Green is ready for a higher level of competition to further his development and quality to a higher level.

His decision as to whether or not to stay with Bayern Munich or seek a loan/transfer will be critical.

Hoping he can eventually become an international caliber player to battle other US prospects for a spot on the USMNT.
