Pachuca was en route to dropping points to Pumas UNAM on Sunday, but an American centerback soared high to head home the equalizing effort.

Omar Gonzalez headed in the game-tying goal for Pachuca in the 88th minute, forcing a 1-1 tie on the road at Estadio Olímpico Universitario.

The 27-year-old U.S. Men’s National Team defender has started in all five games for the Liga MX club since transferring from the LA Galaxy in December.

Pachuca sits in second place on the Liga MX Clausura table with 11 points through five games, and will head back home to host Puebla next Saturday.

Here is Gonzalez’s late goal:

What do you think of Gonzalez’s goal? Think the Pachuca centerback is currently the most in-form U.S. defender?

  1. I am a longtime Galaxy / Omar fan but I wasn’t too impressed with him yesterday. His passes were off and he seemed vulnerable when players ran at him. He was rock solid though against crosses, positioned himself and covered well. The game itself was pretty ragged affair in general. Not a good advertisement for Liga MX.

  2. I think the most inform defender is JAB. HE is playing very well at hertha. BUT it’s a win win for usmnt fans to be debating the most inform players.

    • Its hard to have a debate when when half of our players are currently in preseason. That said Its good to see players like JAB & Omar performing well. Here’s to having our full contingent of players in good form come the March Qualifiers.

    • Steve Birnbaum…and John Brooks…but it is really encouraging to see the success that Omar is having for Pachuca, not just on this goal but so far on the young season: He is the center of a defense that has given up at most one goal during any game so far, and are averaging 0.8 goals against. Statistics have their limitations but those are some good numbers (so far).

  3. Great finishing by Gonzo. Can we get a ruling on the jump by the defender there? I thought you had to actually elevate to get credit for having a vertical…I think he failed here.

Great to see Gonzo getting a good run of form.

  4. Is he being re-born in Mexico? He was okay with the Galaxy last year, but has had better seasons. Maybe he has gotten his mojo back.

    • I’m sure he would have loved to stay with the Galaxy but with a reduced salary ( in order to bring in Dos Santos ) it would have been tough to keep him.
I’m glad the change in scenery is working out well for him.
