Reports: U.S. U-23 forward Maki Tall on trial at Standard Liege

U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team forward Maki Tall is on the hunt for a new club.

According to L’Equipe, Tall has been training with Belgian side Standard Liege for a 10-day period. Tall has reportedly been released from his contract from Swiss club FC Sion, which he signed with last summer.

Prior to joining FC Sion, the 20-year-old featured for French club Red Star FC while on loan from Lille.

Internationally, Tall was a member of the U.S. U-23 team that participated in this past fall’s Olympic qualifying tournament. Tall made two appearances in the qualifying tournament, earning one start. Tall was also a member of last summer’s U.S. team at the U-20 World Cup. The forward started and scored a goal in the tournament opener against Myanmar, but was forced to miss the remainder of the tournament due to a toe injury.

Standard Liege was previously home to former U.S. Men’s National Team centerback Oguchi Onyewu, who made 139 appearances and scored 11 goals during his five-year tenure with the Belgian club.

What do you think of the latest development? Thing the Belgian League would be a good fit for Tall?

  1. As long as he can get playing time, I like the potential move. My perception is that the Belgian and Dutch leagues are great places to go to put yourself in the shop window for bigger clubs, and even if that doesn’t pan out, you’ll still make a nice living.

Having said that, I haven’t watched a game featuring a Belgian or Dutch side in a long time so I could be way off base as to the level of play.

    • Behind Jerome and Rubin (when healthy) and ahead of Bradford Jamison, Tommy Thompson, Haji Wright, Brandon Vazquez. Probably skill wise behind Pulisic and Perez, but he’s more physically developed obviously at 21.
