UCL Rewind: Real Madrid tops Roma; Wolfsburg downs Gent

After showing frustration following questions of his away form, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to make his mark for Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

The 31-year old superstar broke the deadlock with AS Roma in the second half of Real’s 2-0 victory at the Stadio Olimpico. The goal is Ronaldo’s 12th of the 2015-16 competition.

Roma midfielder William Vainqueur had the home side’s best opportunity to equalize in the 72nd minute, after striking the ball from the top of the box. Jesé Rodriguez, who replaced James Rodriguez in the 82nd minute for Real, provided the dagger for the Madridistas just four minutes later.

Real will carry its 2-0 lead into the second leg, when they meet Roma again on March 8 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

WOLFSBURG CLAIMS THREE ROAD GOALS IN WIN VS. GENT

Despite conceding two late goals on Wednesday, Wolfsburg’s meeting against Gent was all that the German side could have hoped for and more.

Julian Draxler shined on the afternoon and recorded a brace before fellow German national team star Max Kruse added a third in Wolfsburg’s 3-2 win at Ghelamco Arena.

Just as the match seemed out of reach, Sven Kurns and second-half substitute Kalifa Coulibaly rescued Gent’s hopes with two goals in the final 10 minutes. The Belgian side will need to score at least two goals in the return leg, which will be played in Wolfsburg on March 8.

What do you think of today’s results? Can Roma or Gent make a comeback in their second leg fixtures?

  1. From the play-by-play, it sounded like Kenny Saief’s introduction as a sub played a big role int he turnaround. Obviously they’re still a heavy underdog going into the 2nd leg, but a 2-0 win on the road in the 2nd leg is at least a non-trivial possibility compared to a 3-0 or 4-0 win.
