Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

Borussia-Dortmund-Bayern-Munich

Two top-of-the-table English Premier League clubs have a lot to play for in London, but Saturday’s spotlight shines brightest on Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund hosts German Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich at the Westfalenstadion. BVB is only five points behind Bayern entering the contest after the latter lost during the week.

The North London derby has developed a reputation for being a high-scoring affair in recent years, and both Arsenal and Tottenham need all three points as the EPL campaign comes to an end. The Gunners have been abysmal in recent weeks, but the Spurs are coming off a lose of their own during the week.

If you will be watching today’s soccer, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. Btw Yedlin had a great speedy run dribbling around 2 or 3 players yet his pass out wide was intercepted (perhaps by an uncalled hand ball ). Could have been a nice chance. But he does leave fans with hope when watching him. Positioning is way better every week and he is gaining confidence in his role and ability. Still gotta woodshed some great passing ability into him. He can tend to make off balance passes with the wrong part of his foot here and there. Getting better tho

  2. (AHEM) …..

    SUNDERLAND……..L……….O……….L…………….

I got my karma tho, with me giving fonte the start on my fantasy team… (Why? Because ….Sunderland) lol really wished he would have not fouled and Borini could have scored. I enjoy borinis celebrations (“bite the hand that feeds you”)

  3. If you have a man advantage why sit back in a defensive shell like that? They were just begging to concede the equalizer.

  4. Yedlin has looked good so far, made some great blocks. Sunderland seem to have a horrible midfield so he is definitely working on his defensive skills this season. I think he also had an assist last week.

  5. Let’s assess the current situation for possible starters for the WCQ games in a few weeks:
    FWD
Wood-scoring goals left and right. Needs to be considered for a start in one of the games.
    MID
    F. Johnson-Assist so far today and looking quite natural at his favored left midfield.
    D. Williams-until this little injury looking strong for Reading. Should be considered.
Bedoya-In a very nice run of form. Should be starting for us.
    DEF
Cameron-back from his injury and starting. Needs to challenge for a starting role at CB.
Brooks-Honestly looking as strong as ever. He’s getting better with each game. Needs to pair up with Cameron.
Yedlin-Starting last few weeks for Sunderland and looks okay. Needs to start at RB for us. Although CONCACAF opponents always pose problems, I think Yedlin can hold his own for these games.
Gonzalez-Started every game so far for Pachuca and looks rejuvenated. Should get called in.

So far I have to say we have some Yanks Abroad performing adequately and just at the right time. Additional thoughts?

  6. This is easy, Premiership: Arsenal, Ligue: PSG, La Liga: Barca, Bundesliga: Bayern, Serie A: Juventus. Haven’t we seen this year after year?

In the meantime I and a few I know continue to be disinterested in US Soccer until Klinsmann and Gulatti are sacked. Btw, great showing against Liga MX in Champions league. Keep it up US Soccer.

    • Arsenal ain’t winning the PL title; they are a sorry bunch of losers, starting with their “specialist in failure” manager. It’s between Tottenham and Leicester in England.

      • Condolences, Matt, for supporting Arsenal. I can’t even imagine how terrible this must be for you, year after year.

I love football, I am just pointing out the obvious-with this manager and this bunch of players, Arsenal will never win the league…

    • You posted the same thing in the Jermaine Jones article and again have nothing constructive to add except misguided criticism. It doesn’t take a genius to claim Barcelona and PSG will win their respective leagues when they have an 8 and 25 point lead respectively. Also, US soccer has nothing to do with the CCL results so I don’t know what you want them to do.

  7. anyone know what’s up with zelalem? think he hasn’t been in the 18 for a while now–league or cup games. it being scotland, i’m just assuming he’s injured, but a cursory search doesn’t turn up any news.

  8. So the 1 vs. 2 bout in Germany doesn’t get top billing on Fox Sports 1? There must be a bunch of cars going left at the same time. They really dropped the ball on that one.

    • Actually, Dortmund v. Bayer is LIVE on FX at noon today, after countless angry fans unleashed on Fox and told them they are truly disgusting creatures.

And make no mistake, Fox are disgusting and suck at life!
