While there were a few sensational goals scored over the weekend, one Argentine forward proved to be the hero for a Serie A side in need of three points. Here are SBI’s picks for The Weekend’s Best (as voted by SBI’s editorial staff):
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
GONZALO HIGUAIN (Napoli). The Argentine attacker was a handful to deal with all game long for Genoa on Sunday, and he scored a brace to help his Italian club keep pace with Juventus at the top of the Serie A table.
Honorable Mention – Hirving Lozano, Harry Kane, Alvaro Morata
TEAM OF THE WEEK
REAL MADRID. The Spanish club had not been performing its best in league play the past few weeks, but against a good Sevilla side on Sunday, Real Madrid dominated. Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo all scored for Madrid as the club cruised to a 4-0 win at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.
Honorable Mention – Pachuca, Manchester United, AS Monaco
MATCH OF THE WEEK
SOUTHAMPTON 3, LIVERPOOL 2. After advancing to the final eight in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, Jurgen Klopp’s men had the 2-0 lead against the Saints with a little less than 30 minutes to play. The Reds would not hold onto that lead, though. Thanks to Sadio Mane, who scored two goals, Southampton achieved an incredible comeback, scoring the game-winning goal in the 86th minute to earn all three points at home.
Honorable Mention – Chelsea 2 – 2 West Ham United, Villarreal 2 – 2 Barcelona, Schalke 04 2 – 1 Borussia Monchengladbach
GOAL OF THE WEEK
LINCOLN (Gremio). The 17-year-old Brazilian channeled his inner-Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Gremio over the weekend, scoring an exquisite back-heel strike.
Honorable Mention – Javier Cortes, John Guidetti
