    • So true. In any soccer publication worth its salt, the passing of a legend like Cruyff merits much more than a one-line reference and a link to another story. Few people have influenced the modern game as deeply, and in so many capacities.

      • This article is just round-up of headlines, not an in depth look at any one topic. Hopefully some of us old people will chime in with remembrances. I was not a soccer fan in my youth, so I have no memories of seeing him play.

When I was in Holland, wearing my DC United shirt, several large Dutchmen (not Japp Stamm), were convinced it was Cryuff’s old club. We drank several rounds to him. This was about 15 years ago now.

      • True. Very few modern day Barcelona “fans” here know that their style of play was essentially developed by Cruyff who based it on the total football played by the European Cup Championship (Champions League Precursor) Ajax teams of the early 70’s.

I remember watching a documentary about Cruyff, when I was younger, where he spoke of smoking after training to relax (this was the 60’s). I remember thinking how abnormal this was in my time which was the early 90’s.
