Facing a barrage of shots, Tim Melia stood on his head to help lead Sporting Kansas City to the league’s top spot with a crucial road victory.

The Sporting KC goalkeeper made several spectacular saves, including one on a penalty kick, to keep the New York Red Bulls at bay. Melia’s performance earned his side a 2-0 win to go with personal honors as SBI MLS Player of the Week.

In total, Melia made six stops to preserve the 2-0 victory, but none were bigger than his spot-kick stop of Bradley Wright-Phillips. Facing the 2014 Golden Boot winner, Melia dove to his right to keep the Red Bulls off the board. It was just one of several saves of Wright-Phillips, who was stopped three times by the Sporting KC netminder.

Melia’s repeated thwarting of the Red Bulls attack earned the goalkeeper honors as SBI MLS Player of the Week, beating out honorable mentions Matt Lampson, C.J. Sapong and Patrick Nyarko.

What do you think of Melia’s performance? Who stood out to you this past weekend?
