Chandler avoids injury as Eintracht Frankfurt’s avoids relegation (Updated)

Timmy Chandler Eintracht Frankfurt 34

In a weekend of disappointments and season-ending results for Americans plying their trade abroad, Timmy Chandler capped things off with a positive result, but one that almost came at a price.

The German-American outside back started in the back line for Eintracht Frankfurt on Monday as his new team defeated his old club Nurnberg in the Bundesliga promotion/relegation playoff.

There was cause for concern though as Chandler left Monday’s match with an apparent injury, but a U.S. Soccer spokesman informed SBI that Chandler contacted U.S. Men’s National Team assistant Andi Herzog and informed him that he was not injured, and will join the USMNT in Dallas on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s friendly with Ecuador.

Chandler was one of a handful of Americans still competing in foreign leagues this weekend. In Mexico, an American defender will be on either side of the Liga MX Clausura title match, as Edgar Castillo and Monterrey square off against Omar Gonzalez and Pachuca. Gonzalez’s team knocked out Club Leon and a couple of Americans in this weekend’s semifinal, while Castillo Monterrey did the same to Ventura Alvarado and Club America.

Elsewhere, Gedion Zelalem started as Rangers lost their domestic cup final, while Christian Pulisic sat the bench for Borussia Dortmund’s own domestic cup loss.

Here’s how the Americans abroad fared this weekend:

GERMANY

Timmy Chandler started and played 90 minutes in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 1-1 draw with Nurnberg on Thursday. Chandler started and played 69 minutes in the second leg on Monday.

Christian Pulisic dressed but did not play in Borussia Dortmund’s loss on penalties to Bayern Munich in the DFB Pokal final.

NORWAY

Ethan Horvath started and played 90 minutes in Molde’s 2-0 win over Brann.
