With just five days until Costa Rica gets set to take the field at Copa America, the squad’s star goalkeeper could be in doubt for the tournament.

Real Madrid keeper Keylor Navas has reportedly suffered an achilles tendinopathy in his left foot, according to his club team.

Navas played a key role in Real’s Champions League title on Saturday against rivals Atletico Madrid, but now his role for Los Ticos is seriously in question. No decision has been made by the CONCACAF nation as to whether they’ll attempt to add an additional keeper, however, that prospect seems quite likely.

Costa Rica called up two additional goalkeepers in their 23-man roster, Alajuelense’s Patrick Pemberton and Leonel Moreira of Herediano.

Los Ticos will begin Group A play at Copa America on Saturday against Paraguay, before facing the United States and Colombia.

How do Navas’ injury affect Costa Rica’s Copa chances? How will they fare in the group without their star goalkeeper?

  1. @mattreed Costa Rica is a CONCACAF nation, come on really?!

achilles tendinopathy aka sore ankles is perfecty normal after a long season. As JohnnyRazor said looks like another euro club trying to keep their players out of an international game… i get it..but too bad.

  2. Should we start putting these injuries to European stars with quotation marks around them. A foot “injury”, calf “injury”, lower back “injury”.

    • Off the top of my head so far the major injuries are Suarez, Navas and Messi. You can be skeptical of Navas if you want because there was no injury shown during the game, he celebrated the win and everything so it is weird. But the Messi and Suarez injuries happened on the field during their most recent games and were obvious for everyone to see. I think Suarez came out of a cup game. There’s no reason to be skeptical of those.

      • Certainly not Messi and Suarez as you said they came on the field. Douglas Costa and Navas I’m a little skeptical of I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few more. Really hoping James, developed a “deep thigh bruise” on the flight from Milan.

  3. If he is actually out of the tournament it will be a HUGE blow to Costa Rica. While they still have plenty of talent elsewhere on the field having Navas in goal would give them greater ability to take risks in the attack. His being out will force them to play a little more conservatively in the back.
From a US perspective this is actually very, very good news.
