Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

With league play already completed throughout most of Europe, this day offers the last chance for many European teams to secure some silverware before the summer as cup competitions conclude in all of Europe’s top soccer-playing countries, from England to Germany.

Bayern Munich will look to close out the Pep Guardiola era with a DFB Pokal title against Borussia Dortmund. Bayern won the Bundesliga, and will try to send Guardiola out a double winner.

Manchester United-Crystal Palace, AC Milan-Juventus and Marseille-PSG are also on the docket in the FA Cup, Coppa Italia and Coupe de France, respectively.

In MLS, rivalries take center stage, with New York City FC taking on the New York Red Bulls at Yankee Stadium in the day’s marquee match-up.

  1. I didn’t watch the Rangers game after Zelalem got subbed out, but from what I saw he had a bit of a mixed-bag performance. He didn’t try to cut through the defense on the dribble often (and when he did he was most often dispossessed, perhaps not that much more often than would be expected of any other player), but he seemed bound and determined to make aggressive forward passes in the attacking third (sometimes leading to turnovers, sometimes to good chances; his passes had risk and reward to them). He looked like he was out to prove he could play.

As for the German Cup final, Pulisic did not play, but that was because Dortmund had to burn two injury subs on defenders in regulation, leading to tiredness that may well have affected the outcome of the match. They finally used a non-defensive sub in extra time, putting on Shinji Kagawa.

  2. Didn’t get to watch the game (I was watching the Scottish Cup final until Zelalem got subbed out), but I see that in the game between Molde and Brann (which Molde won 2-0), Molde started Linde in goal with Horvath on the bench, while Brann started the American Alex Horwath, who had been the 2nd-string GK. Unexpected that between those two teams, one played with an American goalkeeper, and it wasn’t Molde!

    • Hindsight being 20/20 I would think Molde knew Horvath was being called in and were getting the 2nd team guy ready. Although I think Horvath missed last week after a red card.

  3. Just read about a fight between Rangers fans and players and staff after the loss. Fans were upset that zelalem got sub out, it was said he hands down was motm. Glad to hear that he had a good game until he was sub.

    • Of course, where else?
The kid won’t defend and is barely ever involved in the atack.
There’s a reason he was pulled so early and it’s not because he was doing great.

      • “barely ever involved in the attack”

who didn’t watch the game now?

didn’t think zelalem had a great game or anything, but he *might* have been motm just because the whole team was poor. and the defensive substitution was kind of odd, considering they were still level at the time. it doesn’t seem to have worked out for them either, so i’m not sure i’d be so quick to defer to the manager’s opinion on that one.

    • Read the article it was Rangers players and staff fighting with Hibs fans.

The article quoted a couple of Rangers fan’s tweets so not sure that qualifies as overwhelmingly man of the match. He hasn’t played a ton towards the end of the season so one could guess 60 minutes was about what he could do.

  4. An interesting outcome for judging Zelalem and his effect on the game. He leaves Rangers up 2-1, and so, and this would be tactically correct for most, he is taken off in favor of a midfielder with more defensive capability. But Rangers proceed to allow more space and possession, giving up 2 goals to lose 3-2.

Would he have prevented those goals? Would he have helped create more? Helped hold the ball and taken the pace of the game down to Rangers’ benefit? These are just questions but from an American perspective it might make him look better to know he wasn’t on the field for the defensive collapse.

  5. halftime update on zelalem (not sure i’ll be able to watch 2nd half):

showing some good skill, definitely confident on the ball, always asking for it; doesn’t really make penetrating runs at all, usually just moving into space in order to make attacking passes to others; tidy with most passes, but not connecting on most high-reward passes; pretty much a non-entity on defense.

worth noting–and i’ve said this before–his mechanics are top-notch. he stands out when he gets the ball, because he’s just so *smooth*; he basically glides around the field–i can see why people are high on him, even when he hasn’t shown much as a professional.

    • He’s not a keystone 90+ every game kind of player, but maybe could develop into one if he packs out his frame and becomes more physical.

Right now he’s a tactical selection. If you’re playing a team that is conceding possession to you, his weaknesses become irrelevant and he can be allowed to spread the game. He would be effective for us against the underling teams in CONCACAF but I’m afraid he wouldn’t be able to do much to elevate the team against that long list of teams we are trying to reach and surpass.

I worry that unless he does develop physically, he might never be a player we can count on against those teams that are better than us. It really makes you appreciate a well-rounded if not spectacular player like a Michael Bradley who can do both.

  6. very early goal for hibs. zelalem on the left side of 3-man mid. having to drop back to get the ball since hibs are playing defend-and-counter at the moment. *intense*. can’t imagine the players can keep up this pace for long.
