Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary

sunderlandyedlin

In any other year, a Liverpool—Chelsea matchup this late in the season would have major implications on the Premier League table. This year is different, though, as Sunderland’s clash with Everton takes centerstage.

Mired in a fierce relegation battle, a Sunderland victory on Wednesday would seal the Black Cats’ place in the Premier League next season. A Sunderland win would also doom Newcastle and Norwich to the Championship alongside Aston Villa.

Liverpool no longer has a mathematical shot at making the Champions League by virtue of their finish in the Premier League table. They will have to win the Europa League (vs. Sevilla on May 18) to get back into the UCL next season. Jurgen Klopp will likely rest some of his first-team players this week before that clash next week. Diego Costa, Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry will all miss Wednesday’s match against Liverpool, possibly leaving the door open for USMNT defender Matt Miazga to step into a starting role.

Elsewhere, the MLS is back in action for the first time since last weekend with five games. The top two teams in the Western Conference — Los Angeles and Colorado — both return to action after picking up wins on Sunday.

  1. Wait, so Sunderland not getting relegated? That is heroic. Based on what I have seen of Yedlin at Sunderland, if he does well at Copa America, then Tottenham give him a shot to beat out alderwiede/walker. If he doesn’t, then they loan him out again. If he does well and doesn’t beat out walker then they sell the shit out of him.

    • He’s certainly earned a spot for Sunderland, but I haven’t heard anyone give him much of a chance at earning a starting spot at Spurs. I only watched the first half today, but there were a few times had Everton made even an average pass he would have let someone in behind.

  2. Yedlin almost getting an assist from a long ball.

Wins a corner kick that gets Sunderland a 3rd goal off a rebound.

SUNDERLAND…..L……O……L….. AMAZING! I am laughing with joy and surprise at the 3-0 score line of Sunderland 3 Everton 0…..

What a time to be alive

  3. Gorgeous ball over the top from Yedlin to Defoe in the 54th minute. Robles is having a disaster of a game. Best of luck to Everton going forward with him.

  4. I hope Sunderland stays up, and I hope Yedlin stays with the club. If they add a few attacking pieces and banish Cattlemole, they could make a Stoke like turn around into a decent midlevel squad.

    • Cattermole is beyond garbage.

Sell Defoe, Larsson and cattermole and/to buy lukaku. Bring back giacherrini from loan.

    • I’m torn about this. Sam seems to be helping him a ton, the team has the pieces to be a solid EPL club next year, and there seems to be genuine comaradery between him and the other players… but it’s still Sunderland.

Also, the Sunderland fans are incredibly toxic. I sometimes read their fan forums and it’s shocking what is on there sometimes. During the past dozen or so games they’ve looked a pretty good team, and Yedlin has been pretty much rock solid throughout. His attacking game seems to have regressed some, but his defending has been excellent – often against the opposing team’s most skilled attacker, too. Honestly I think he might be a better defender than attacker now. Yet no matter how well he plays, after every game, there are threads proclaiming how useless Yedlin is, how he’s the worst RB in the league, and how they’ll never be a good team with him around. It’s madness.

But he won’t be playing at Tottenham anytime soon, so I think he needs to look for another loan or a permanent move to another EPL club. He’s proved that he can play at that level, and he’ll only get better.

At least they are Liverpool fans where they were burning American Flags in protest of the previous owners.

I don’t care how upset and irate you are about ownership. I’ll never forget or forgive those trashy fans who opted to protest in such a disrespectful and irrational fashion.

      • Who cares what the fans think, its obvious the coach has full faith in him and thats all that matters. If hes getting 90 minutes week in week out in the EPL, im good with that.

  5. The question shouldn’t be will Sunderland stay up, it should be how is Everton not in the relegation fight. They are so bad.
