Whitecaps, Sporting KC paired in CONCACAF Champions League draw

Five MLS teams were drawn into the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League, including the Vancouver Whitecaps and Sporting KC who will face off in Group C play.

The defending MLS Cup champion Portland Timbers were placed in Group B with CD Dragon of El Salvador and Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa, while reigning Supporters’ Shield holders New York Red Bulls will face Alianza and Antigua GFC from El Salvador and Guatemala, respectively.

Newly crowned Liga MX Clausura title-holders Pachuca will go for their second CCL title coming out of Group E, while three-time champions Monterrey will look to conquer Group D.

  1. I know that they are trying to keep MLS & Liga MX separate for the group stage, but they should place last MLS team in one of the Mexico groups rather than an MLS group.

    • I think Vancouver could have ended up in a group with a Liga MX team but wound up being paired with a US MLS team instead, i.e. just luck of the draw. Maybe I’m wrong about that though.

      • Just remembered Vancouver is in as the Canadian team, not an MLS/US team. So yeah, luck of the draw.
