El Tri came into Saturday’s match as one of the favorites to win the Copa America Centenario, but Chile didn’t even allow Juan Carlos Osorio’s side to have a sniff at winning the match.

The Chileans advanced to the semifinals after defeating Mexico 7-0 at Levi’s Stadium behind Eduardo Vargas’ four-goal display.

Edson Puch scored his first international goal to get the match going for Chile, when the 30-year-old slid home Marcelo Diaz’s rebound in the 16th minute.

The defending Copa America champions provided a massive blow to Mexico on the stroke of halftime, when Vargas doubled the Chilean lead in the 44th minute. The 26-year-old beat Hector Moreno to Alexis Sanchez’s cross, before calmly placing his effort beyond goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Sanchez, who was involved in almost all of the team’s goals, was rewarded with a finish of his own four minutes into the second stanza, after Chile’s high press forced a critical turnover by the Mexican backline.

Chile took a 4-0 lead in the 52nd minute, when Vargas netted his second goal of the match on a second Sanchez assist. The Hoffenheim forward then completed his hat trick five minutes later.

Vargas wasn’t done though, adding a fourth finish in the 74th minute, before Puch found his second goal in the 87th minute, capping off Chile’s dominating effort.

El Tri breathed a sigh of relief in the 37th minute when Vargas smashed home the game’s second goal, only to be called back for offsides. Chile moved the ball very quickly around the box to setup the sequence, before Jean Beausejour played in the cross to Vargas.

The victory for Chile sets up a meeting with fellow CONMEBOL nation Colombia on Wednesday in the tournament semifinals.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Eduardo Vargas made all the right runs and was directly involved in what seemed to be all the Chilean goals on the night. The Hoffenheim attacker capped off his great evening with four of the team’s finishes.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

Already up 2-0 at the half, Alexis Sanchez‘s second-half goal in the 49th minute all but sealed Chile’s road to the semifinals.

MATCH TO FORGET

Mexico’s attack was stifled throughout the night, and Javier Hernandez‘s lack of chances in front of goal costed El Tri greatly.

  1. best part of the night was watching the 5th goal go to the back of the net

Field Advertisment boards had the mastercard ads

goal goes in as it read ” Priceless”

  2. I loved it, but some of my Mexican family members didn’t take it kindly. So even defriend me in facebook. I guess they are still butt-hurt about it. The meme that I liked the most is this one: “Pornhub phone Mexico last night, they want their rape scene back”

  3. That was more fun to watch than it should have been! I normally am not one to revel in the misery of others, but when your fans act the way they did last night and all through the tournament, they deserved that 100%. I know that not all Mexican fans are to blame, but when it happens over and over, in the face of constant requests from FMF and CONCACAF to stop, at some point you have to put it on all the fans.

If you go there and do not participate in the chants, throwing of things, and abuse but still allow those around you to continue doing it, than you are complicit and deserve as much blame as anyone else. Take pride in your team and country, do not let others call you the names being thrown your way, and tell those that disgrace your fandom to stop! I have watched soccer for 35 years and never seen any other fanbase act the way Mexican fans do, and they think they are entitled to do what they please, really disturbing!

As for the team, they quit and it was also shameful. Where is their pride for themselves and their team? To give up, act like spoiled kids, and pout while the other team keeps stepping on your neck just shows the mentality of the team. They did not even care enough to make a hard foul to send a message. Ochoa couldn’t be bothered to get back into the net after missing a save, and then blamed the rest of the defense when the ball when into the net. That would never happen to the USMNT, and that makes me so proud to root for our team and our country!

    • This has been going on with Mexico fans for years and years and years. Don’t hold your breath,…it’s not going to change.

For my part,…I expressed my displeasure at Lincoln Field for the USA v Paraguay match when I was told that I had to pay $6 for a bottle of water and could not have the bottle. The server started yelling at me!? Ridiculous! That aside,….there was no trouble during the game. The Paraguayan supporters were great. Pity the Mexican fans can’t control themselves,….but I think that is just the result of built up resentment and anger —- “we love the American $,…but we hate America.”
As for Ochoa,….really? A Mexican GK? What do you expect? I’m surprised he didn’t try injure/tackle the Chilean goalscorer.

Forget El Tri,….they should start calling themselves El Siete.

      • Thanks Brian, I know they are never going to change, but I do hope they start to get punished for the actions of the fanbase. The players seem to have more understanding than they did in the past, but until they stand up and tell the fans to stop it will never change.

I have been going to international soccer games for 25 years, and have been around some sticky, uncomfortable situations, but nothing like what happens at Mexican games. The security is a joke, and the level of self policing is no where to be found. Who cares if they stop selling bottles as long as they allow them to throw batteries and urine. Why do they have to wait for someone to be seriously injured because of a green laser before they stop allowing them to bring them in?

I expect nothing to change, and that is why I enjoy it when they lose, and celebrate when they get trounced like they did last night. El Tri….meet karma!

  4. Did anyone catch that disclaimer by Univison before the Mexico game relating to the behavior and language of certain fans, and in no way does that express the views of Univision towards the LGBT community???…Ha ha ha. That made me laugh as the Mexican fans chanted “PUTO!!!” when the goalkeeper punted the ball. So happy Mexico embarrassed themselves and Univision, as their bigotry was on full display.

    Reply
    • How do you figure Univision was embarrassed? And why would you be happy about them being embarrassed? Univision / UniMas have been a saving grace of this tournament in terms of coverage, bringing for free what TPTB in cableland continue to charge an arm and a leg for.

  5. I would love to know what Osario scribbled in his little notebook during the game!

7-0 in a major competition is not even funny. The Mexico team should be ashamed. Where is the pride?

  6. Chile was amazing, and Sanchez a total animal. True.

But at the same time on a couple of those goals I had to wonder about a possible fix. There were some completely listless efforts on defending and goalkeeping.

On the one Sanchez assisted from the left – the ‘slip’ by the defender failing to challenge Vargas. And the lack of effort to clear the ball on the sixth (I think it was 6). Ochoa’s punches right back into traffic. IDK

  7. Mexico tried going toe to toe with them and abandoned their possession/counter attack game. They didn’t get outclassed Chile’s one touch pass was deadly. Woo. Mexico got their privilege checked. They gave up. The first goal was a big blow to their ego wow. As a USA fan I love this.

  8. Christmas came early this year. I am almost as happy when Mexico loses as when the U.S.wins. I hate how dirty the Mexican players get when they lose to the the US, I hate that their fans throw stuff at us, I hate that Mexican-Americans that have never lived in Mexico one day act like traitors and support a country that isn’t theirs (it is fun to visit when they have their American dollars and then go back to the US). It really burns me up when the Mexican anthem is played and everybody in the crowd is pledging their allegiance to Mexico despite 90% of them living here and many have American kids.

    Reply
    • I feel you. Support your country. You’re right they are traitors. Is not a support just for the team but they take it to a bye level. They hate the USA.

      Reply
    • Woh buddy, the tone of your post leads me to believe you have some other issues with Mexican Americans not related to soccer. So before you go all Trumptastic in here i’ll leave you with this. When I went to go watch USA VS Columbia the majority of US supporters were, *gasp* Latinos!
The family next to us were first generation Mexican Immigrants, all wearing USA gear and yelling loudly. I should also mention I know plenty of “anglo” Americans who actively root for England, Germany and the Netherlands, etc due to some long ago ancestry that has been watered down in the melting pot that is our country. I get the criticism of fan behavior, but watch out for the xenophobic tones.

BTW When I call my cousins in Mexico, the know who Jermaine Jones and Brad Guzan are, I don’t get a blank look and dismissive look, unlike most fellow Americans here.

      Sincerely
2 generation Mexican American, and proud USA supporter.

    • No need to start hating people for their heritage or patriotism my man. There are plenty of first and second generation immigrants who have split allegiances to other countries as well as ours. There are also plenty of people who travel from other countries to see their team play in international games no matter who the teams are. As long as it is done in a respectful manner and not with hate or abuse, let them cheer as load as they want.

The problem comes when a fan base continues to disrespect the game, the other team, and their fans at every chance they get. Be angry about that, and let them know it is not acceptable, but try not to stoop to their level of hatred or we become no better than they are. The view is always better from the high ground brother!

  9. I was at the game with my daughter and it was crazy. I bought her a bottle of water and they poured it in a cup. I was like, ‘that’s new, why’d they do that. Oh right, they’re worried about it being thrown.” And then Chile scored the 3rd goal and the rain of cups started. It got really tense in there and the guy next to me with his kid got up and left I presume because she got a little scared. I too was wondering if I should usher my daughter out before we got caught in a rain of beer or worse. But weirdly after Mexico went further down the Mexican fans turned on their own team chanting olé every time Chile touched the ball, screaming their homophobic chant at Ochoa, and even cheering when Chile scored! At that point Chile flags and fans appeared all over the place and it was clear they were not going to be hassled. But despite some terrible fans, there were plenty of classy Mexican fans in the crowd who congratulated Chilean fans and were visibly upset at people throwing stuff.

    • Unbelievable the olé chants from Mexican fans against their own team.

I remember Herc Gomez making the comment at some point that Mexican fans are apt to quickly turn on their heroes. What an odd cultural characteristic.

It makes me proud of our American values – that this is something we would never do. And also that our team wouldn’t let down while wearing the shirt like that.

      Reply
      • You’re spot on, never in a million years would that happen with the US fans. I was really trying to think of a game where we flat out just gave up and while I can think of bad beats to less talented squads I personally don’t recall a match where our guys rolled over and got hammered.

      • Are you guys newborns? Fans boo their own teams all the time when they’re playing poorly. Happens everywhere, even in the US.

      • Yes JCC, came out of the womb typing on a cellphone. I’ve seen it at baseball games, football games..etc, but I have NEVER seen us soccer fans boo or ole the other team. Leave early, yeah, maybe.

  10. I live in Santa Clara. The prices for this game were nuts. The 3rd and 4th tier was going for $300… 1st and 2nd tier $400 and $500+. I don’t know if I’d ever get over paying that much money to watch my team get massacred in a major tournament.

    • I was at the game as well, and there were some crazy fans, and some angry fans, but mostly everyone was just resigned. Although we left early (only 5-0!), so we may have missed the worst. But on the train out of there, all of the Mexican fans were upbeat, and the whole car broke in a chant USA USA! The train ride was the most fun part of the night. Also, we only paid $68 for our middle deck seats, so I think the prices mentioned here are after market.

      Reply
    • This has been my biggest gripe about the Copa: ticket prices have been absolutely ridiculous.

Granted, I know some of these stadiums are huge but it also hasn’t looked good on TV seeing middle sections of stadiums patched with fans or completely empty and entire upper bowls completely vacant.

If they’re trying to make the real tournament here on an annual basis I think they need to reevaluate the supply and demand.

      Reply
      • Agreed, I thought there was no question Seattle would be sold out… Not even close. Make the tickets reasonable and pack the stadiums, build it up over a few years to a high profile event then start trying to screw everyone with ticket prices if you must. This is too big of a tournament to look that empty on TV. I will say the Mexican fans turned out. Even though they’re a disgrace.

  11. Mexico was in a cupcake group. Jamaica would have beaten them but just could not finish. Then, they played Venezuela, a team that has won 0 games in CONMEBOL qualifying … 0 games!!!! Bolivia is even better than them winning 1 game; and Venezuela put up a decent fight against Argentina. The game would have been a bit closer if they would have converted on the penalty; Venezuela had a couple of more chances that would have made the game interesting.

  12. Where to begin?

    Well…7-0 is a good start.

Unlike others, I don’t feel some kinship towards Mexico because they play in the same federation. I understand sportsmanship and I would be the first to help an opponent off the pitch, but that level of civility would cease once that same opponent continued to display a lack of sportsmanship. For this reason, I’m always puzzled at the short memory of fellow USA supporters taking the high road and wishing Mexico well (you really think the same would be returned?) or these same USA supporters obsessed with FIFA rankings.

Let’s be clear that Mexico doesn’t represent CONCACAF and Mexico doesn’t represent the United States. As we’ve seen FIFA rankings have proven time and time again to be skewed, laughably inaccurate and largely irrelevant when the whistle actually blows in major tournaments (World Cup, Euro’s, etc). As we’ve seen, Mexico supporters have proven time and time again to be considered the most classless in our region from the chants, the objects being thrown at opposing players or the violent conduct towards opposing supporters in the crowd.

Again, for those reasons and more: Mexico doesn’t represent CONCACAF and Mexico doesn’t represent the United States.

I don’t care about perception here or abroad towards our federation. I don’t care about FIFA rankings. I also don’t care if Mexico loses…but that was absolutely embarrassing. I was embarrassed as a United States fan and I can only imagine how Mexican fans are feeling right now.

    7-0….

If there’s any solace for our SBI-Mexican supporters it’s that a lot can happen when the U.S. faces the greatest player on the planet. It’s not out of the question to see a score line similar to tonight. However, unlike tonight I can be sure of two things: our U.S. players won’t completely give up and our U.S. fans will chug their beers instead of using them as projectiles.

    7-0. Embarrassing.

      • Correct and another example of civility, sportsmanship and the American attitude our players routinely display.

I’m not being hyperbolic or facetious when I say I absolutely believe with every bone in my body that if Mexico was in the exact same situation they would have lost…happily so…to spite the US.

      • To do that then the US would have had to stop playing, stop trying, not be the best they could. It would have meant not achieving our highest score ever in qualifying. In short, in order to embarrass Mexico, the US would have stopped being the US in the Panama game. I think it is better that we play with intensity and effort at all times, regardless of the outcome.

      • I know, I know but would have been great to send the Mexican federation into complete collapse for a few years. I think we would have still topped the standings with a tie against Panama

    • Why waste the beer like that right.

I guess the Mexico supporters could go back to throwing the ziplock baggies filled with piss like they do in Azteca. Its one thing to see them doing that ish on Mexican soil its a whole nother level of anger watching them acting like that on US soil. The stadium police should pull the video tape of the stands and charge the offends with assault.

      Reply
    • No argument with your overall view but by definition, Mexico does represent CONCACAF. This is true as long as CONCACAF exists and they are in it, and regardless of whether you or anyone else likes it or wants to support them because of it or not.

    • I certainly share many of your sentiments, and I desperately enjoyed watching that entire spectacle last night (particularly their boorish fans predictably turning on them to the point of ole taunts).

But in 2+ decades of watching the USMNT like a junkie, I’ve learned that the rivalry is at its most satisfying when both countries have talented teams are playing at the tops of their game, and the stakes are high. As an example, I can’t think of anything (not even Donovan vs Algeria) that was as deeply enjoyable as unceremoniously dumping Meixco out of WC 2002 in front of everybody with a dos a cero. Unfortunately, that can’t happen if they aren’t there…

Or a a more direct example — how cool would it have been to punk them in the Copa America final? Yes, very unrealistic given the things that would still need to happen…. but definitely cool, no? For me, probably about the only thing that could relieve some of that lingering pain from November….

I don’t root for Mexico in games against other teams ever. Nor do I worry about what their fans think of us (wouldn’t bother me at all of they disliked us just as much). But yeah, I guess you’d have to say I can’t hate on it as hard as you. To me, it’s just more fun when Mexico are good.

      But I get your points…

  13. Its funny… after Jamaica and Venezuela’s games… where both teams just tore Mexico’s defense apart… I was on here saying that MX had better be careful and OMG what was Chile going to do to them if Jamaica could tear them apart. I got a bunch of flak for that from the MX fanboys… I am a little happy to be vindicated. MX has not played well all tournament and some really bad officiating has masked it allowing them to think they could play with Chile. 7-0 is the result. and Guardado… I love it, “mexico doesn’t deserve this result…” of course they do, the karma from the puto and culero chants they have been singing all tournament… and from the crap they keep throwing at opposing teams… it finally came back and bit them in the behind.

I watched every minute with massive shadenfraude, and after the game I turned to univision to watch the meltdown… it was classic, asking Miguel Herrera to come back! whatever, this is not Osorio’s fault those players on that field quit. Zero fight, and if I am JK I am learning something from how Chile played, because the US has that kind of athleticism and can press that high… I think the US has finally found the means to throttle MX forever… just press high and force MX to play the long ball all game.

Finally, man, Chile is soo good. I worry about the US playing Argentina that beat this Chilean team 2-1. US is gonna have to bring it to have any kind of a chance. whoo so much to let out…

  15. Worst thrashing of the Copa. Osornio apparently was Klinsy-ing this Copa. He used 4 different formations and there were 6-7 changes from the winning performance against Uruguay. It showed.

Pekerman made 10 changes against CR and lost.

Klinsmann stayed with the same players and had only two formations, and now is in the semi’s

I hope this sends a loud message to Klinsmann about tinkering too much.
While the US HAS to make changes for the Argentina game, throwing in players who have not played much together will result in a Mexico-like drubbing.

  16. Where was the pride for the shirt tonight. They went down three nil and players just quit. Layun and Guardado were awful. Chile seemed to be able to attack Mexicos right flank at will. Also wasy kept giving Chile a huge pocket of space between midfield and the back four. Have to say it was great watching Chile throttle our primary rival. Generally Mexico and the FMF tends to unravel after these types of loses as the whole federation tries to plant the blame. They will try to find a scapegoat to deflect the general lack of heart shown on the field most wiil blame Osorio but i could see Ochoa and Guardado getting blamed too.

I genuinely thought Mexico would lose, more than likely in a tight affair. But they LEGITIMATELY got THUMPED. Maybe the fans should have thrown more trash on the field after the second, third or fourth goal to get the squad fired up for a comeback. Remember the confederations cup back in 2009 when the USA beat Egypt 3-0. Later we discovered that the Egyptians had some prostitutes come to their hotel who robbed them. Thus, the bad performance against the USA. One day the truth will come out about Brazil losing 7-1 and Mexico losing 7-0 last night.
