Copa America (Day 2): Your Running Commentary

Brazil+v+Ecuador+3Yo-3gPLd5rl

The U.S. Men’s National Team kicked off the Copa America against Colombia on Friday night, but the tournament kicks into high gear with a trio of games on Saturday.

Action begins with another Group A clash, as Paraguay meets Costa Rica (5 p.m., Fox/UniVision Deportes) in the aftermath of last night’s USMNT defeat. The result of Saturday’s clash will be crucial for the U.S., and Costa Rica’s loss of Keylor Navas could prove detrimental to their ability to compete in the group stages.

Following the conclusion of that match, Group B gets underway with a match that pits Haiti against Peru (7:30 p.m., Fox Sports 2/UniVision Deportes). Widely pegged as underdogs, Haiti features familiar faces to many American soccer fans, including Soni Mustivar, Jean Alexandre, Pascal Millien, Mechack Jérôme and Steward Ceus, each of whom plies their trade at American clubs.

Finally, the Copa America nightcap is set to be a clash of South American powerhouses as Brazil takes on Ecuador (10 p.m., Fox Sports 1/UniVision Deportes). Brazil enters as one of the competition’s most decorated teams, but it is Ecuador that has kickstarted CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying with a bang, sitting even on points at the top of the table.

If you will be watching today’s soccer, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action.

  1. This tourney has been all sizzle, no steak thus far…

…though that goal Ecuador didn’t score due to the AR calling it over the line will be a major talking point in that group going forward.

  2. That Costa Rica vs Paraguay game might stop big Fox from ever airing a soccer game again. “Send all soccer games to the cable channels”. What a horrible showcase.

    • The outcome was relevant to the US team, and not only that the result was huge in our favor. It was exciting because every failed chance by either team was a victory.

    • Clearly the schedule was set for South American TV, and Fox wasn’t going to air a game in prime time so they ended up with Costa Rica vs Paraguay.

  3. Reasons to watch Copa America in Spanish instead of English.
    Spanish: Marcelo Balboa, Hristo Stoichkov
    English: Alexis Lalas.

    • Better than that: Univision / UniMas are free, or free excepting only the cost of a digital antenna. (Just $30-40 bucks from Amazon will do it.) Cut the cord a couple of years ago and save 2-3 times that amount every month.
