Spain needed just one point to win their Euro 2016 group, but Ivan Perisic had other ideas.

Having amassed five points heading into Tuesday’s clash, Spain fell to second in Group D with a 2-1 loss to Croatia on Tuesday. Led by an 88th minute Perisic goal, the result sees Croatia leap to the top of Group D, sealing a much more favorable route through the knockout stages.

Perisic fired the decisive goal just before stoppage time, beating David de Gea to his near post to seal first place in the group.

In the 70th minute with the score level at one apiece, and just moments after a penalty claim was denied on the other side, Croatia conceded a penalty kick of their own as David Silva was ripped in the box. Sergio Ramos stepped up the penalty kick, but Danijel Subasic saved the central defender’s shot to keep the scoreline level. It proved to be Spain’s last chance, and a defining moment in what ended as a 1-1 draw.

Eight minutes in, Spain had their lead. Played in by David Silva, Cesc Fabregas darted in on goal before sliding the ball towards the back post. Alvaro Morata lied waiting for a mere tap-in from a yard out, opening the scoring for the reigning European champions.

Just moments before halftime, Croatia fired back as Spain conceded their first European Championship goal since the opener of Euro 2012, a span of 735 minutes. On a cross in from Perisic, Nikola Kalinic darted in front of a ball-watching Sergio Ramos, finishing from close range to restore the deadlock heading into the second 45.

Croatia had a fine chance just 14 minutes into the game, but were undone by both the crossbar and the left post. Following a giveaway, de Gea was caught well away from net, but Ivan Rakitic’s chipped shot clipped the crossbar before colliding with the post, keeping Croatia off the board for the time being.

Croatia’s victory sees them avoid a difficult draw, as Spain takes on Italy on June 27. Croatia, meanwhile, awaits a third-place finisher from either B, E or F on June 25.
