Club Tijuana’s Copa MX-opening victory ha a distinct American feel.

Paul Arriola and Amando Moreno scored early goals, leading the way as Xolos topped CD Toluca, 3-0, on Tuesday night in the first match of 2016 Apertura Copa MX play. The win sees Xolos claim three points to open group play.

Arriola opened the scoring with a ninth minute finish, giving Miguel Herrera’s side an ideal start. After darting past his defender, the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team attacker fire across the goal to give Tijuana an early lead.

Moreno doubled that lead just three minutes later, kneeing the ball home from inside the penalty box. A third goal was added by Leonel Perez just before halftime, giving Tijuana all the club would need to earn a win.

Arriola and Moreno were far from the only Americans in the lineup on Wednesday night. U.S. Men’s National Team defender Michael Orozco by U.S. U-23 midfielder Alejandro Guido and U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team fullback John Requejo in the starting XI.

Tijuana returns to action on July 24 for a match against Puebla.

    • This was a cup match played by mostly the reserves for Tijuana. Greg Garza was the only American in the starting lineup for the first league match last weekend. Arriola was a starter for the second half of the Spring season and was on the bench Friday as was Orozco, but none of the youngsters suited last week. The keeper Lopez is also from the US, he played for their youth teams the last couple of years I believe.
