After making just one appearance for Hoffenheim last season, U.S. international Russell Canouse is on the move.
The 21-year-old midfielder is set to go out on loan to 2.Bundesliga side VfL Bochum for two years. Canouse’s latest loan contract is set to expire in June 2018.
“I’m happy that the move to VfL has finally worked,” Canouse said. “I want here to be here in Bochum to take the next step and get more playingtime at a high level. The game style that VfL plays, I like it. ”
After growing up in the United States and playing briefly with the New York Red Bulls academy, Canouse moved to Germany when he was 15 to join Hoffenheim’s youth system. From there, the Pennsylvania native played for several of the team’s youth sides before briefly appearing with the senior squad in 2016.
In addition to his club experience, Canouse played a part with the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team from 2013 to 2015, making 12 appearances and scoring a goal.

I’m guessing he’s done at Hoffenheim. A 2-year loan is probably pretty rare for a player his age that figures in the parent club’s plans.
Its likely a loan to buy deal. Something where its a loan and if they get promoted to bundesliga they’ll have the finances to buy him, but if they dont then they will loan him one more year and try again.
The timing of this move is good since he will have preseason with his new team. If he gets playing time this is a good move.
