Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

gooch

European leagues continue to ease into play, and while the Bundesliga has yet to join them, the large contingent of German-based Americans Abroad will look to see the field in domestic cup action.

As the Premier League rolls into its second week, Lynden Gooch could see his second straight start with Sunderland following last week’s loss to Manchester City. The 20-year-old midfielder was the lone American to see the field during the Premier League’s opening weekend, and a repeat start for the Black Cats could see Gooch match up with Brad Guzan in Sunday’s clash with Middlesbrough. In other English action, Geoff Cameron could make his season debut against Manchester City while Chesterfield’s Gboly Ariyibi will look to build on last week’s assist as his side takes on Shrewsbury in League One play.

German soccer sees the DFB-Pokal take centerstage, giving several Americans the opportunity to feature throughout the weekend. Aron Johannsson may be in line to make his competitive return after more than a year away when Werder Bremen takes on Sportfreunde Lotte while Julian Green could see the field for Bayern Munich’s match against FC Carl Zeiss Jena.

Liga MX also features several interesting matchups as Omar Gonzalez and Pachuca face Jose Torres, Luis Silva and Tigres. Elsewhere, Miguel Ibarra, William Yarbrough and Leon face Jonathan Bornstein and Luis Gil’s Queretaro, while the Tijuana contingent face off with Necaxa.

  1. Green not in the starting eleven against the 4th division side, as Bayern starts an almost all first team squad.

Fafa is starting for St. Pauli against Vfb Lubeck (Lubeck beat St. Pauli II 1-0 on the 14th)

      • Also earned the corner that led to Hummels goal. Appears he’s been switched back to the wing with Coman, Robben, and Costa all out at the moment. Lewandowski did his best Wondolowski on that pass from JG.

  2. So…I heard some rumors. As people may (or may not) know, Gooch as dual or triple citizenship. His father is English and his mother is Irish even though he was born and raised in the US, but apparently, the English FA is sniffing around.

    hmmm…

  3. MONDAY
Christian Pulisic and Dortmund face Eintract Trier in DFB-Pokal

Andrew Wooten and Sanduasen face Padderbon in DFB-Pokal

Bobby Wood and Hamburg meet FSV Zwickau in DFB-Pokal

Theoson Siebatcheu and Reims play Red Star in Ligue 2

Aaron Schoenfeld and Hapoel Tel Aviv travel to Maccabi Haifa to open the Ligat Ha’Al (Just for you Bizzy)

Not listing the Monday games is like the NFL not listing Monday Night Football.

      • It’s still useful information. I check this to see if I want to get up early and watch games on the weekend. It’s nice to know when players are not playing until Monday. Also, they do Friday so…..

      • Its not like they do a AA Monday preview so you’d think they would include the Monday games especially with two key players in action.

  4. Amando Moreno scored a goal for Tijuana in cup play this week, Arriola and Guido also played. 17 year old Brandon Vasquez saw his first action with the first team subbing on for Moreno in the second half.
