Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

guzan

Brad Guzan helped earn three points in his English Premier League debut for Middlesbrough, while Sunderland’s Lynden Gooch got his second consecutive start to begin the season.

The U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper made a return to the Premier League in an away derby match, clocking in with four saves for Middlesbrough as they defeated local rivals Sunderland. Astonishingly, in Guzan’s first appearance he has equaled the amount of wins earned in almost 30 appearances with Aston Villa. On the other side of the Wear-Tees derby, Lynden Gooch continued his rise with his second straight start for the Black Cats. Though his team disappointed again this week, Gooch again impressed with his tenacity and fervor both on and off the ball.

German cup soccer started up this weekend with the DFB-Pokal, and plenty of Americans were involved in the knockout drama in those matches. Julian Green made an appearance for Bayern Munich as they torched their opponents, FC Carl Zeiss Jena, 5-0. Meanwhile, John Brooks, Alfredo Morales, and Timmy Chandler all won games that went all the way to penalties.

Lots of American players were in action in Liga MX in Mexico. Querétaro’s Jonathan Bornstein scored against William Yarbrough and Leon, but Yarbrough’s Leon came out as the winners.

Here’s a closer look at this weekend’s Americans Abroad.

  1. Need to add Jack McBean in the future since the Galaxy loaned him out to League 1 Coventry City. Also, is Haji Wright playing yet in Germany?

    • Played his first match for Schalke U19s in their third match of the season, not sure why. He went 88 minutes.

Also in the U19 West Region Will Pulisic is 2-0 with two cleansheets for BvB.

    • A 3rd division team/player (League 1) is a bit to far down the line to track. It’s hard enough to keep track of players in the first & second divisions of Leagues Abroad. IMO we shouldn’t be listing any of the 3rd division players….they’re not going to help any of the US National Teams so why bother.

      • You’re probably right at least for weekly updates. I suggested last season for a monthly Youth abroad update for the guys on U19 and U23 squads. I’m sure Gary thought perhaps Haji had moved up after his hot start last fall. I threw in W. Pulisic since it was one click away once I found Haji’s stats, that and I wanted to make sure CP hadn’t suited up for the U19s over the weekend.

  2. Bjorn Maars Johnsen played 16 minutes and had an assist for Hearts as well, Norwegian-American born and raised in North Carolina.

  3. I watched the Sunderland game and thought Gooch played well until about the 80th minute when he was gassed. Strong tackling, simple passing to help keep possession and had a decent shot attempt.

  4. Le Havre AC (LeHAC) are on 4 points through 4 matches and in 7th place through tiebreakers. Hopefully Bradley can lead them to promotion this year after last season’s heartbreak at the end.

    • I don’t think Carter Vickers needs a loan yet. He’s 18 and is making the bench for a top 7 club in the premier league. I know injuries are big part of why he is there, but he is definitely in Tottenham’s plans.

      The other two… yes.

    • And Zelalem, although I expect Gedion, Miazga, and Yedlin to be moved before the deadline, things should heat up this week. Yedlin’s deal last season happened on the final day of the window, Zelalem’s loan was reached on August 22 last year.
