Julian Green remains in pursuit of a first-team role with Bayern Munich, but after a hat-trick performance over the weekend, the U.S. Men’s National Team forward has earned the praises of his new manager.

Carlo Ancelotti revealed on Saturday that Green will be given every chance to start and play for Bayern Munich as the club approaches the Bundesliga campaign. Ancelotti’s comments come following Green’s marvelous performance over the weekend, one which produced a 35-minute hat-trick against Inter Milan in an International Champions Cup clash.

“He played well, really well. He scored three goals and he was ready in the box,” said Ancelotti, who is in the midst of his first preseason in charge of Bayern Munich following the departure of Pep Guardiola. “It was a really good performance. The team built good offensive play and Julian was ready to finish.

“He’s with us. We have nothing special for him. He trains with us,” the Italian added. “He will have the opportunity to start and to play. He can play and he’s ready to play. He’s improving. He’s working well during the training sessions and the only way that he can do this is to stay with us.”

Green has primarily featured for Bayern’s reserved throughout his career, save for a lackluster loan spell with Bundesliga side Hamburg. Last season, Green played 28 games for Bayern Munich II, scoring 10 goals.

Bayern Munich returns to action on Wednesday for an ICC clash with Real Madrid.

What do you make of Ancelotti’s comments? What do you expect from Green this season?

  1. i read on another site that ancelotti is considering him as a striker only, that green is not competing for any other position…..

i think he should find somewhere to play because dont think it will be at bayern and he should not play for the reserves again…of course wishing him the best….

  2. Maybe Ancelotti is just trying to drive up his price tag by saying he is staying at BM and will be a big part of there season hoping somebody comes in with a decent offer for him. I am a Green fan and believe he has a lot of talent but there is a lot of talent ahead of him there.

  3. too good to go on loan? He wasn’t good enough to sniff the field for hamburg and had his loan terminated early. He needs to use this preseason to showcase himself and find a new gig where he will actually be on the gameday roster.

      • Haha very true but we’re not professional athletes. I am rooting for the kid but a hat trick in preseason is not enough evidence to think he’s good enough to take a spot from the long list of proven, world class attacking players that sit in that same locker room….Or “too good to go on loan” which is just a laughable statement.

      • Somewhere I read that clubs don’t like to loan players in their last year of contract. Basically, if they do well the player tends to want to sign with the new club and the original club looks dumb for losing out on the bright talent they developed and getting nothing in return. This does boost the hope that he could be sold, but at age 21 a lot of big clubs will just wait a year and get him for free and JG may not want to transfer to a small club when he would have a bigger selection of suitors later.

Bottom line, for US fans or JG fans a transfer is best. For JG he’s still young enough another year at Bayern wouldn’t be the end of the world.

  4. He has to do like Klinsmann says. Be the first one to practice and the last to leave. Dedicate yourself and work harder than the others. show an intense desire and hunger at all times. Make the most of your opportunities. Besides the Bundesliga season, he has a chance to play in cup games and early round CL games when they may want to rest the regulars. If he can manage 8 to 10 starts in all competitions, that will set him up for more opportunities in the future. Because he is only 21, if he can establish himself in two years, then he can make the next World Cup and who knows what thereafter.

  5. I have my doubts he’ll be a gameday regular this season, but there will still be plenty of opportunities to play for BM in meaningful games.

    • Let’s hope Carlo plays more reserves in those games, Pep pretty much played his regulars during those matches until they had already qualified in the group stage. Pulisic was really lucky that Tuchel played many more players last year during their competitions than most managers would.

  6. Poor Julian, another year of being on the squad with little playing time. Too good to go on loan, not good enough to get meaningful starts.
