Cody Cropper signs with Revolution

After spending the past six years in England, Cody Cropper has returned to the U.S. to continue his club career.

The New England Revolution announced on Thursday that the club has signed the former U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team goalkeeper as a Discovery signing. The deal comes after Cropper left English side MK Dons following the conclusion of the English Championship season.

“Cody is a player whose development we’ve been tracking the past few years,” said New England Revolution General Manager Michael Burns. “He’s a promising young goalkeeper and we’re excited to bring him to New England.”

Cropper first moved abroad in 2010, joining the academy of Ipswich Town before joining Southampton in August 2012. Last season, Cropper made nine appearances and logged 685 minutes for MK Dons in the Championship before seeing his season end due to a shoulder injury. Since, Cropper trained with Minnesota United in an effort to maintain fitness before signing with a new club.

Internationally, Cropper has been called to the U.S. Men’s National Team for camp, but has yet to make a senior appearance. He has, however, been a mainstay on the youth level, having made 21 appearances with the U-20s and seven with the U-23s.

Cropper joins a Revs team that currently features both Bobby Shuttleworth and Brad Knighton at the goalkeeping position. Shuttleworth has made 20 league appearances for the club this season, while Knighton has featured in the remaining four matches of the Revs’ season.

What do you think of the Cropper signing? How will he fare with the Revs?

  1. Really curious about this. Why did Cropper, as a US international, not have to go thru the allocation process? The discovery claim seems odd to me as well.

    Hoping someone knows the answer.
