Edgar Castillo out at least eight weeks with broken kneecap

Edgar Castillo Monterrey 71

A U.S. Men’s National Team defender is set for an extended absence after suffering an injury in training.

Fullback Edgar Castillo will miss at least eight weeks with a fractured kneecap, his club Monterrey announced on Thursday.

According to the team, Castillo was injured in training Sunday and did not travel to Haiti for Monterrey’s CONCACAF Champions League win over Don Bosco FC on Wednesday. The injury turned out to be a fractured patella, or knee cap. While it will not require surgery, the club said it expects Castillo to miss at least eight weeks.

The left back had previously appeared in all three of Monterrey’s games thus far in the 2016 Apertura season. Monterrey is set to face Leon on Saturday in Liga MX action.

What do you think of the news? What do you expect from Castillo upon his return from injury?

  1. While I don’t wish injury on any USMNT player….to me this isn’t really and issue for the US. Look back over the Copa Tournament and it becomes clear. Fabian was the first choice Left Back during the tournament. When Fabian was used elsewhere or was injured 2 center backs (Besler & Orozco) were used at Left Back instead of Castillo. IMO that is a clear indication that Castillo IS NOT viewed very highly by the coaches.
The good news is that this injury should force the coaches hands to call in other potential Left Back options….Villafana being the most likely to benefit from the injury.
