The New England Revolution are taking a close look at an experienced American defender.
Former U.S. Men’s National Team center back and free agent Oguchi Onyewu is training with the Revs. Although the MLS transfer window is closed, an MLS team would be able to sign free agents like Onyewu until the September 15 roster freeze.
Onyewu, 34, has had training stints with New York City FC and Rangers, but was not signed by either club. He was dealing with an Achilles issue during his trial with NYCFC and has suffered chronic knee injuries throughout his career.
The defender has been without a club since English side Charlton Athletic released him in 2015 after just one season.
As for the Revs, they have allowed a league-worst 47 goals in 2016. They are currently riding a six-game winless skid and have not scored in their last four matches. The Revs are currently in eighth place in the Eastern Conference, six points adrift of a playoff spot.
Do you think Onyewu would be a good fit with the Revolution? Can he handle the turf at Gillette Stadium?

From the Revs’ perspective, they have open roster spots, so why not. They did a good job reclaiming Davies.
This is fantastic news.

Gooch, I was one of your biggest fans. The Borgetti stare is one of my fondest football memories. But, it may be time to hang ’em up pal.
The unkind turf at Gillette is not a great call for an aging defender with knee troubles. But I’d love to see him patrolling a back line once again.
No way those 34 y.o. knees can endure the stress from wearing grass cleats on turf day after day. The longer studs will damage his ligaments.
Look at the caption in this article about that shows the Sounders practicing on a grass field while preparing for Portland. Even the pros can’t practice everyday on turf because of the physical toll it takes on their bodies.

Where is that turf expert that claimed SSFC practice everyday on their artificial turf now? BS.
