FC Nantes announces Alejandro Bedoya move to Union

Alejandro Bedoya’s long-discussed move to MLS is finally complete.

FC Nantes announced on Wednesday that Bedoya has left the French club in favor of a move to the Philadelphia Union. The move will see Bedoya feature in MLS for the first time after playing the first nine years of his career in Europe. The Union have yet to confirm the transfer.

According to ESPN, Bedoya joins the Union after commanding a $1 million transfer fee and will make $1 million per year with his new club. Meanwhile, the Chicago Fire, who held the top spot in the allocation order, reportedly received General Allocation Money, Targeted Allocation Money, a first round draft pick, discovery rights on a player and the Union’s allocation spot in exchange for the rights to Bedyoa.

“Alejandro Bedoya has contributed greatly to getting FC Nantes into the elite,” Nantes said in a statement. “He also won a place in the hearts of fans since his first implementation in Ajaccio and his famous cry of joy since starting on October 2013. FC Nantes thanks Alejandro Bedoya, and wishes him good luck for his future career that we will certainly follow. We Believe That You will win!”

Bedoya joined the French club in 2012 following a stint with Swedish club Helsingborgs IF. In total, Bedoya made 77 appearances for Nantes, scoring 10 goals throughout his stint. In addition to Nantes and Helsingborgs, Bedoya previously featured for Scottish powerhouse Rangers as well as Örebro SK.

What do you think of the move? How will Bedoya fare with the Union?

  1. I wouldn’t put them as a top team, but a team with a chance now.

We are really going to see some separating of men from boys. Who can carry a team on their backs? Who can’t?

  2. He has spent 7 years in Europe with 3 at Nantes. Don’t think he would get much higher than that, so I think he has about reached his peak as a player. He still has a good shot at making the USNT in 2018. I don’t think playing in MLS one and a half seasons of so will change that. So, looks like a decent move for him.

    • God, they’re the new Chivas. They traded him for allocation money, a draft pick for a draft that’s in danger of becoming irrelevant and a players discovery rights that more than likely wouldn’t even sign for the fire (would you?). They’re a joke, so glad a jumped off that Shipp (pun intended).

    • Not a Chicago fan, but as a Chicago resident I’ve completely given up on supporting the Fire. I would reguarly attend matches, watch them on TV etc but no more.

That entire franchise is a dumpster fire.

  4. I’m not sure how i feel about this move but it does seem like all of our veteran stars are returning stateside for whatever reason. Bedoya is a hardworking, give it your all type of player, a hallmark of most americans, but one has to wonder if his skillset will diminish like those of Jozy, MB90 and TH?! I’m far from a eurosnob but even i know that competing vs higher levels of competition will only improve a player and 3 of our key veterans, who will be relied upon in Russia, are back in MLS. At the end of the day though a player has to do whats best for him, and that i can never be mad at!

  5. I think this is a father choosing his family over his soccer career. MLS isn’t the best competition, but when you can play competitive soccer and still fight for a USMNT spot AND raise your kid in the USA, its an easy decision. Just ask Dempsey, Bradley, Agudelo, and Jones.

  6. I think this could be Bedoya admitting that his time with the Nats is limited and it is time to collect that paycheck while his stock is still high. I have no problems with this move. With Klinnsman preferring to play him more centrally at Copa, his time is limited with Nagbe waiting in the wings.

  7. Good move for the Union, bad move for Bedoya. He had visibility playing in Europe, he plays in midfield, not an area where we lack depth. Can’t help his chances for continuous playing time, just ask Edu.

    • Edu has always been out on the field when he’s healthy (though maybe not in the spot he wants to play).

I think this is a decent move for Bedoya. The move to Philly has been in the works for a while now (over a year), and with Stewart at the helm they are looking good this year. I think Ernie will get the most out of him.
